Do you guys just hold the tap and die when threading or do you have something that goes in the tail stock? I saw something at Little Machine Shop but wasn't sure if it was what I needed.

Rob,

I'm no expert--I have never tapped a pen. But, I have tapped wood, metal, etc for other projects.

I don't see where a motor would be helpful. Why would you want to tap on the lathe??

If you just want to hold the piece and keep it stable, that I can understand.

Just a FWIW!!

Not a motor just a holder that the tap goes in and then you advance the tailstock while slowly turning the headstock by hand. For instance how do people tap the threads for the Sharpie refills? I thought I saw a photo or videa where someone had the tap in a holder in the tailstock.

How are you supposed to use a tap and die to do custom pens when you don't own a metal lathe?

Thanks Johnnie!!!

I understand that!

(now, if my lathe HAD a handwheel....................................)

Did you skew it off ?! Seriously, you could turn one from wood, should
work if you ever had the urge to tap or o.d. thread.
Accurate, maybe not..turnable..heck yes!

I just tap mine by hand since it is so few threads. put the blank in a vise with rubber covers to protect surface. Never thought of the lathe, but it might be easier.
