Anyone want to recommend good sources for buying whole or large segments of deer/elk antler. Many places offer bags of antler by the pound, but you may not know what type of deer/elk it came from.

I don't know about NC, but here in Georgia I go to the local deer coolers and trade pens for old antlers that nobody picks up. They are usually more than happy to make the trade. Just an idea. Russell

Any deer processing place that skins cuts and wraps deer meat will have all you want...dont expect any real big and symetrical racks but the rest yea...spikes would be ideal they are pretty long sometimes

Drive down I69 with a bone saw and take your pick! That's usually not the safest thing to do though. If you call the county road commissioner, they pick up the bodies and often hack off the antlers. Right now, this isn't happening as much as it should though, because it costs money to have workers cleaning up the roads and this state has no money. I have been watching the bodies just liquify and deteriorate into nothingness over several months time. It's quite nasty sitting in traffic with all the dead deer on the shoulder..you have to roll up the windows when it is warm outside! Michigan is the #2 state for deer roadkill. We had something like 68,500 deer hits last year, which equals something like 1 deer hit by a car every 1.5 minutes. Don't quote my numbers exactly, but it's something insanely high like that. There's no doubt thousands more deer hits that go unrecorded as well. Heck, I hit 3 last year in my semi and I don't report those. I only report deer hits with the truck that exceed $5000 in damage, because that is our deductable. Fortunately, in the truck when I hit a deer the usually lay into the solid steel bumper and roll under the truck and the tires, thump thump thump thump thump, hamburger. Just before impact you try and time it so you step on the gas which raises the bumper a bit higher. Slowing down increases the odds of pulling the deer into the grill.

Say what you will about me but... that's one thing I've always wanted to see. All I every see is the 200' path of blood down the interstate.

This was done by about 100 pounder a hundred miles south of Dallas on the interstate. Totaled the car, and cost over 1000 in dr bills....and no antlers....

Yea, that's a bad one, and unusual. Most times if a deer does hit the windshield, the deer will bounce off. Sure the window may break and even might dent in some, but rarely does the windshield give up and a deer make it through. Odds are really good that the windshield on that car was not installed correctly. Todays cars, the windshield is part of the structural strength. The car should be able to roll over several times and the windshield should not come out from it's seams. I bounced 2 deer one right after the other off the windshield of my wifes little chevy. Can't recall the make of that car, but it was tiny with a pointed down little hood that scooped those babies right on up into the windshield doing 60 mph. I instinctively ducked as they smashed into the windshiled one at a time. The glass took a heck of a beating, it was caved in just a bit and broke into a million pieces but it held better than the hood and the roof did. The car was purple when I started and brown when I finished. I litterally knocked the uhhh poop:wink:, right out of those deer!

Thanks everyone for your ideas...and experiences...just sold my first two dear antler bullet pens today...yee haw!
I started deer hunting last year and now that I have started turning antler I see bucks which I know are too small to shoot, but I can't help but think....."I could get several pens from that 4 point!" ...must resist...
Thanks again

Just chase down the deer with the 4 points, jump on his back and hack off the antlers. The deer will be fine. What's the worse that can happen?

Jeff, you should not be telling people how I get all my antlers!! It will be very hard for me with a lot of competition this year. But since the cat is out of the bag, I might as well tell you that you can also check the thickness and tenderness of the back strap while you are riding the deer and getting the antlers. If it is big and tender, then just take the deer down with the hack saw across the neck and butcher it! No bullets wasted, free antlers and some might tasty and tender deer meat.

PS, just be careful on public land. Some people think it looks strange to see someone riding a buck deer and sawing at the antlers, and they just might try to shoot you.:biggrin::wink:
