found a craftsman table saw listed on craig's list for $50. says it takes a 12" blade.
since I don't have a table saw (yet) would this be a good investment? they say it still works.
thanks.

Some of the older saws have very flimsy fences and check the throat plates. Some have sheet metal plates that are not easily replaced for zero clearance use. I just sold my old 10" and replaced it with a Ridgid (made by the same company - Emerson Tool Company) but had a much better fence system and better adjustability.

I think that Sears is also having some of their stuff made by Ryobi. One of their 10 inch saws looks EXACTLY like the Ryobi, right down to the details. Their Biscuit cutter is also a kissing cousin to the Ryobi model.

12" blade? See if it isn't a type-o. Most 12" table saws are serious machines, I wouldn't think that Sears would have sold a model like that in a few decades.

Yes, Hitachi is also a big supplier. They have been using lowest bidder mentality for a few decades. Most of the older tools (20-30 years old) were made by Emerson. BTW, if anyone has one of the old Craftsman radial arm saws, go to www.radialarmsawrecall.com as they are part of a recall.

I had a craftsman that I bought in 1971 and used all the time up until three years ago. It was a great saw for everyday use. Little under powered. I replaced the fence with a mule cabinet fence and the miter gauge with an osborne after I got to where I wanted some real precision. Making the zero clearance is easy. I just passed the saw onto my new son-in-law.

I also think the 12" is a typo.

my first saw was a small craftman (i think it cost about 100 new) but it only lasted about a year and the motor burned out( did't use it that much) sears used to have good tools but these days I think their crap.

Let's keep apples to apples.

My son has my Craftsmen, after I used it for about 3 decades, following my dad's 3 decades. Yes, the fence is NOT as nice as my new DeWalt ($900+). Can you build a sled for an old craftsmen??? IF so, is it worth $800 to you?

Aw man, hey Mike can you buy that for me and ship it up here. Or better yet get it to Stan and then I will get it from Stan. $75 is an awesome deal.

I just saw one for $50 in Canterbury, too.
Is there a sale on 12" Craftsman TS's this weekend?
Looked as beat up as that one, too

Well, the new Craftsman 12 inchers run about $1500 I think, so I doubt people are upgrading. The old 12 I linked to I know nothingabout, but that one is pretty dang rusty.

Craftman does have a fair share of products made on the same lines as Ryobi. In fact the BT3100 that I have in my shop is discountinued, but still available as the Craftsman 21829 now. Great saw for the $300 that I paid, not so great at $500 but still a fair deal as the precision that it allows doesn't get match until you hit the $800+ range. Not everyone likes it, but it does a very good job. I knwo that when I upgrade, it'll be to a European still saw in the $3k+ range, not one of the American styles.

Price out 12" blades, and you'll see why people sell them. :)

Putting a 10" blade on a 12" saw doesn't always give you quite as much depth-of-cut as using the 10" blade on a 10" saw.

I would say that I wouldn't buy one that is direct drive. Too expensive to replace motor for what is a $75 saw. I used a 1979 model belt drive until last year. Cut many a board with it. Will get you into using a TS for cheap. Don't spend over $150 on ANY craftsman TS. Another just like that one will come by soon for $50.
