First there was Bubbasville and now…
The new IAP Chapters!

Some of us have tagged along and supported the original "Bubbasville" in Fort Worth or even "adopted" the nickname for local meetings of IAP members for several years now and it is time we made the leap. What leap? The leap to IAP Chapters, of course!

What is an IAP Chapter?

An IAP Chapter is a formalized, local structure whose purpose is to extend the guiding principles of the IAP to face-to-face meetings. For those of you who have not met other pen makers, it is a marvelous way to expand your circle of friends as well as to share knowledge first hand which is sometimes difficult to effective explain in the online world. Additionally, face-to-face meetings gives each member a chance to introduce friends and families to the hobby in a more social environment where everyone gets a chance to participate and enjoy the hobby to their own desired level of involvement.

How Do I Start A Chapter?

If you know four or five people who are pen turners and you don't quite know where to begin in forming an organization, I would be glad to assist you with ideas for places to meet, how to organize the first meeting, and suggested demo ideas. The only requirement is that a face-to-face meeting must be scheduled at least annually. There is no charge for starting a chapter in your area.
An IAP chapter will establish an organization where members can benefit from locally directed programs that aid members in many ways:

Improving their pen making skills
Provides localized volume purchase of turning supplies and materials
Facilitates getting to know and work with other pen turners

What do We Get When We Start?

First, you get the same privileges and responsibilities that you currently enjoy as a member of the IAP. Second, each Chapter will have a sub-forum of www.penturners.org created for discussing and posting items which are of particular interest in the geography served. Third, you will get the grateful appreciation of folks who want the fellowship and/or need the hands-on experience that a local organization can provide.

How Do I Start a Chapter
Contact me through the forum email!

UPDATE 09/15/2008

To form a Chapter, you need a minimum of 5 people committed to participate in at least one meeting per year. More meetings are encouraged, but each group may set its own meeting frequency.

Once you have 5 members ready to roll and want to set up your first meeting, contact me and I will set up a sub-forum for your Chapter. Keep in mind that the Chapter sub-forum is not a substitute for the rest of the IAP forums but simply a location to post Chapter specific activities.

Phoenix, AZ Chapter?

Lou,
Thank you very much for the thoughts and time on this. I think it is a great idea.

How many penturners do we have in the Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ area?

Who else in the Phoenix, AZ area would be interested in this?

Thanks again Lou for all you do to progress the penturner community!

I think that is GREAT, Lou. I am watching it and hope to see one pop in my home area of Memphis. Not there yet, but in a couple of years . . !

Nick, Hank and others - If you are interested in forming a local chapter but don't know who else might reside in your area, start a thread under this forum using the location as the subject. I'll start a couple and everyone else can follow suit. Remember to use your location as the subject so you can be found!

Well I tried to get a New England Bubbasville going a while back and met with dismal response. If anyone wants to go ahead with a north east IAP chapter I'd be glad to help but I'm a little busy lately to take the lead.

I guess we're not officially an IAP local chapter but this Saturday there will be a number of Oklahoma members plus some from Texas and Missouri meeting at my house so if the guys and gals want I'll head one up for OK.

Southeast Chapter of the IAP

It is my great honor to announce the intentions of organizing the Southeast Chapter of the IAP! I have been exchanging email with a few folks who have helped me organize a few thoughts and have pledged their help in getting this off the ground.

First and foremost, for all of you folks who have participated in the Atlanta Bubbasvilles, you are very welcome to join the Southeast Chapter! I will start another thread in the Local Chapter Thread, so as not to hijack Lou's thread here. Please join me over in the other thread for specifics.

I thank Lou and Jeff for making this possible, and am excited about the possibilities they have provided.

Thanks

Robert

I would be interested in a Indy area group. I'm new so I'm not sure of the number of turners in this area.

Milwaukee, Chicago or both??

Since I am conveniently located for either and since the WoodCrafts of the area would PROBABLY be cooperative.

How many would participate in Milwaukee (assuming the WoodCraft would allow us to meet monthly or so)?
How many would participate in Palatine (Making the same assumption)?

Ron, there are several of us around the Indy area. If someone want to run with this feel free if not Linda and I may be able to do something a little down the road.

Lou .... two quick suggestions to consider.

First, can we get this forum in a more visible location on the site? It's too tucked away.

Second, we need to find a way to let new members, i.e. people who post in "Introductions", to let them know about the chapters that might be near them.

Third, I know I said two but here's another one, if there was a way of getting people to plot their locations on the member map .... we could have an easier time of identifying chapter members. I wonder if we can make some sort of auto-response that pops up when new members sign in?

Just some random thoughts!

Great suggestions, Doc. I will start a more visible thread and have Jeff make it sticky! (I'd do it, but I hate having jam on my fingers when I turn.) I'll also see about getting Jeff to modify the welcome message (from when a new member gets a login and password) to include mention of local chapters.

Leave it to a professor to have "two things" turn into three!

But on a serious note, we have a member map? Dang, I learn something new every day!

Any body up for a Nashville chapter, there are a few turners near Memphis, a couple near Nashville and a slew of them in East Tennessee, Nashville or somewhere around the center of the state would be nice.

If I had someone to design some cool graphic buttons, I'd put some links right up in the header next to the logo for Local Chapters and some other stuff.

Doc there's a link on the front page. We need something even more visible?

I do think we can get a NE chapter going.

I'll search the forums for New Englanders to whom to reach out.

Oklahoma Chapter? We need at least 5 active members more would be better. We had 5 at the get together at my house on Saturday plus 1 each from Texas,Mo, and Ar. I'd be willing to hold semi annual meetings at my shop.

Houston Area

I've seen a lot of folks post on here from time to time in the Houston area - when your power gets turned back on after IKE (saw 42% still don't have power), how about gauging the interest here?

I know there are chapters all around here but I haven't seen anyone specifically say Tallahassee and traveling 4 hours is out for me personally. Look forward to seeing if anyone is around here.
