Almost completed my Jr. Gentlemen's II pen, but hit a major snag: the roller ball ink refill won't protrude from the nib. When the end cap is screwed on (see photo on the left), there's a lot of thread showing. I pushed the end cap in as far as it would go. When I remove the spring, the tip protrudes nicely. The only solution I can think of is to cut the spring shorter.

That's a rollerball, not a ball point. The spring goes BEHIND the refill, not inside the nose cone where you have put it.

The assembly sequence is to screw the tailpiece, with the spring inside it, onto the barrel. Then drop the refill in from the business end of the pen. Then place the nose cone over the writing tip of the refill and screw it onto the barrel. Nothing between the writing tip of the refill and the hole where it pokes out of the nose cone.

We assume you are putting the spring in the end cap which it should be. It needs to be seated in the cap correctly as well as the end of the refill. Sometimes you have to finigle with it somewhat to get it to seat right. You can try flipping the spring around. Many times these pen kits that use springs have different sized ends that do play a role in assembly.

The other thing to make sure of is you used the nib coupler (which is longer) and the end cap coupler (which is shorter) in the correct place. Here is the instructions https://woodturnerscatalog.com/cdn/shop/files/app_jr_gent2.pdf?v=2733545655781154467. Now I have done this a couple times too but make sure the trim rings face correct way. Assembly of these kits do need attention to smallest details. Good luck.
