I am thinking about buying a new set of drill bits. I would like some info on what maybe would suit my pen making and be more accurate than my harbor Freight set. What angles name brands etc can't break the bank

I swear by Norseman bits. Not sure what you would consider pricey but Norseman's are worth it. I bought a full set a few years ago, fractional sizes as well as number and letter sizes. When I bought them they were around $190.00.

Oh my, these look great!!fisch is a great brand as well. Good drill bits are pricey, period.
 
I will second the Chicago-Latrobe drill bits and sets. Go To MSC. They have every kind and style of drill bit. Sign Up for their Flyer. They have monthly sales and often include drill bit sets. Many years ago I scored a 115 piece set of Chicago Latrobe drill bits (Fractional, Letter, and Number). I added a set of metric 3mm-13mm in 0.5mm steps. I am currently looking to replace my "J" bit used to drill slimline blanks.

Maybe it's me, but I can't say that I've gotten the result I hoped for out of my Drill Doctor.
 
Some years back I corresponded with a GREAT guy who had a presence here. Called himself Johnny CNC. He also made, and sold, custom between centers bushings for a variety of pen kits. Eventually, he stopped and I don't know what happened to him. He was a machinist. So, when I began to complain about drill bits and unacceptable holes in my pen blanks, he recommended Norseman. They're expensive. Last I checked, they were about $100 per set. I bought both fractional and metric sets. They are absolutely wonderful. Some day, my son and grandchildren will still be using them.
 
20+ years ago, I found some drill bits for sale on CL by a retiring machinist. I went there for a metric set he had listed. I ended up buying a number, letter and fraction set in one box, a fraction set, a letter set and a metric set. All for about $150. All of them American made. There were a few missing and a few were dull. I have a drill doctor and sharpened them. I gave the number, letter and fraction set in one box to my son because I had all of them separately. I have had to replace a few over the years, but it was a great investment.
So, check CL and offerup and FB marketplace before spending a lot of money. Might get lucky.
