Burning wire?

I use use guitar strings. I secure them in a 1" round dowel.
I know nothing of guitar strings other than the fact that Eric Clapton (he's a favorite) really knows how to make them sing.

Are there a couple string sizes or types that you find work really well? Do they wear out using them for burn in? I'd guess you can just put on a new string if that happens?

I have a neighbor down the street who plays all the time and could be a great source of strings.

I like using the brass wound strings. They seem to work better. Usually found on acoustic guitars. I don't do a ton of burn lines but have been using the same string for years. Lol

I have used some super thin hardwood (hard maple) cutoffs and had great success with that.

I use basic mechanics wire that I have sitting around anyway. Generally, I do a tiny score with a skew turned sideways to make a starter groove so the wire doesn't slip out of position when I start the burn. You can use pretty much any wire as long as it's not soft aluminum. The trick is getting multiple burns of the same size.

Just tried the S/S leader and it did nothing. Lathe was at 3K rpm and the wire had a bit of pressure on it. Back to the drawing board.

Go to the Big Box store and look for coils of steel wire. anything from #24 gauge to #18. It willl not last as long as nichrome wire, but it will work. For pen sized burn rings, you need as fast as the lathe will go 3000RPM and very firm pressure!

DO NOT wrap the wire ends around anything you cannot afford to lose! I make handles from dowels and small nuts. drill a small hole through the dowel and then a larger hole partway to hold the nut. The wire gets HOT when using and you do not want to touch it, or afterburner will take on a whole new meaning! DAMHIKT!
PS. You cannot burn most synthetics.

Dowel with drilled holes and a screw to hold the wire in place. Just need to get some wire now.
