Greetings
I use my independent 4 jaw chuck primarily to round square stock then I switch to a collet chuck. This time after turning an acrylic blank I mounted round brass stock to make a mandrel. I couldn't zero it out. With the jaws snugged up to the stock I could move the stock inline with the jaws about 0.015 inches. The last tooth inside the chuck is slightly proud of the rest. If I snug down the jaws so that the stock slides on the teeth I can't push the stock thru the chuck. If I really crank down I can lock the stock and zero it out.

Is this a common jaw design for 4 jaw? If not, can I hit with a grinding wheel to reduce the height so the rest of the teeth hold?

Thanks
Mike

Another way to do it is to put the 4 jaw scroll chuck from your wood lathe into the 3 jaw chuck of your metal lathe, that way you don't need to hassle with the independent 4 jaw chuck. I don't know the size of your metal lathe but a 5" 3 jaw chuck should handle it, even a 4" should do it if you reverse the jaws on it.

hi Rick.
I don't have a wood lathe scroll chuck only a 7 x 12 mini lathe. I have a 4 in independent jaw chuck, a three jaw and a collet chuck. Sometimes I like the 4 jaw to dial in round stock. I mat try grinding down the four proud teeth.
