A trio of spectraply and stainless steel bottle stoppers

I picked up a starter kit from Stainless Bottle Stoppers and these are the first three. These were done with the brass insert epoxied in and finished with abrasive paste and Pens Plus.

Very Cool. I'm usually not a fan of spectraply, but those look great! - I've had a box of bottle stoppers and all the fixin's for a long time now, but I have not made even one yet. - Dave

Anything in particular you don't like? It can be a mess.

I have some Koa that's hopefully going to yield a bowl and two bottle stoppers so I wanted to get some practice in first.

BTW - thanks for replying. I feel like you've commented on over half my posts and it's appreciated.

Hi Jeff, no there really isn't anything in particular about spectraply and I have bought spectraply and have used it myself. Strange huh, I like segmented blanks and for all practical purposes it is just a kind of segmented blank. I can't even say it is the colors because wood isn't supposed to be those colors, because I like dyed woods and I have even dyed some myself that are obviously not natural wood colors - like blue, so it isn't really that either. And it isn't color in general because I'm a big fan of colorful resin blanks. I've bought tons of them and I have even started to cast them myself. I guess what I meant by "not being a fan" is that there isn't anything wrong or off-putting about them, they just are not among my favorites.

Honestly there isn't a blank that I can say I don't like. Shucks, I even have a bunch of that pesky Inlace Acrylester - I just don't turn it very often because it is so incredibly hard and chippy - sometimes it feels like I am trying to turn a piece of glass.

Koa is can be simply amazing, especially when it has that iridescent chatoyancy. From what I can see, you don't need much practice - the bottle stoppers all look great!

Very nice I recently picked up some of those style stoppers because I like that they stand and easier to display. Also picked up some spectraply too. Have a few ideas for them. Like your shapes. Thanks for posting.

Thanks! I googled for some inspiration and ended having to make some changes along the way but I'm happy with them.

I like the standing variety for practical use at home and probably for display. I'm wondering if they're going to be too easy to knock over and start damaging them if selling. Maybe just some wood with 18mm holes could keep the majority of them secure?

I like non natural colored wood myself. Does this mean that there are no trees with blue wood in nature ? Just kidding.
 
Mike. It can make for a great looking project. Cool thing is that while the plies are linear, they will be curved after you turn it.

Yes, I really like that, and the pattern repeating if you have multiple sphere like shapes. And the angular blue/grey/black is a nice pattern. In some woods you get something similar.

Actually, there is Blue Mahoe, but it is really more grey than blue. Some pine wood looks kind of blue-ish because of some kind of beetle borne fungus. - Dave
