USS New Jersey teak and bog oak

Jr Statesman fountain pen made with Teak from the deck boards of the USS New Jersey, and Irish bog oak, with some aluminum from a Celsius energy drink can. It makes sense if you know the guy haha. Having a laser is starting to really come in handy.

That's awesome! It comes from the deck boards from the renovations that started in 2019. It's amazing how much (what I assume to be) grease is imbedded through the wood. It's soaked all the way through, but it turned surprisingly well and with a wipe of acetone the finish adhered without issue. The smell is interesting. It smells very much like you'd expect a warship to smell if that makes any sense. The smell, like the grease persisted well beyond the surface of the wood and it was cool. My shop smelled like an engine room for an hour.

You are correct about the smell. I made a pen for my brother.

Never took French as it could be spelled a number of ways. They spell one say and pronounce another; champagne is shampain.

Beautiful work! I just received some teak deck wood from the USS Alabama which I am very excited to use for a special project. Did you have any trouble gluing the tubes given the oil in the teak? What glue did you use?

I had no problems at all. Turned great. I use thick CA glue for gluing up all blanks. The one thing I'd recommend is making sure to wipe it down with DNA or mineral spirits before you apply the CA finish. The boards are impregnated all the way through with oil. It makes the shop smell like a warship

Thanks! I usually use Medium CA so I am hoping that will be fine. I was thinking of starting to try epoxy to glue the tubes but I had read it may have issues with oily wood, and teak is oily to begin with.... never mind the machine oil that I am sure is there!

Good advice on the DNA prior to finishing. I was thinking acetone but I think either should do the trick!

Now to figure out if my cheap laser engraver can manage to engrave a line of morse code on a curved pen!

Haha, best of luck on your engraving, I have yet to hook up the rotary attachment on my laser. And yeah acetone/dna/mineral spirits, all should work the same I'd imagine. I just turned some teak burl and it was like butter and is gorgeous but boy was it oily. The sawdust was clumpy almost as though the wood was still wet. Crazy.
