I turned four burl blanks and all pieces had very small chips or break outs at the ends before reaching bushing diameter. All pieces turned with a very sharp skew chisel. I found that using the point of the heel end of the skew when approaching the end of the blank and light pressure reduced tendency for chipping. What methods have other turners used to prevent end chipping on burl blanks?

For burls, I go uphill with the skew, from bushing to center. Brake the rules!
This is not breaking the rules. It is the proper way to turn all blanks. Bushing to center on both side. The reason for this is the wood is unsupported on the ends when you turn right off the ends. Material is always supported turning from end to center. Have been doing this for all my turning life. I tell all people who want to listen to try it that way. When you get the very very end of the blank to finished size you can lightly make a complete straight pass or two from one end to other without stopping.

If it is not stabilized, I would be pouring the CA on it, particularly when I get close to size and on the ends. After covering it with CA well, turn it a little and cover again. And turn the speed up to 3000 if - you haven't.
