Was wondering being this is a pen turning forum but also a turning forum in general because of some projects that people do here and show us all, I had a question. Has anyone made a pen or any other object from your Christmas tree after the season's use? If so what and could you show us? Maybe you have not in the past and maybe this could be a project this year. With the Pandemic and the basic lock downs of last year and things sort of relaxing some this year maybe the importance and or symbolism means more and this could be a way of marking the occasion. Maybe include a family photo in the cap. Maybe cast some other item that had meaning this past Christmas. Maybe make it a tradition. Just some lazy time thoughts.

It is funny and goes to show you what a great forum this is and the features that are available is amazing. But as I was writing this there is a feature that shows other related threads dealing with the topic. Here is one from 2011. Go figure.

Good question John. I haven't turned any yet but I have collected wood from many of our Christmas trees. I have one that was a gift from my parents. It was a live tree and after we planted it, it lived for maybe 10 years then died. It's bone dry and I just need to get something done with it. The log is about 4' tall and I was thinking about maybe turning some candle holders or something like that. I know both my kids would love to get something from that tree. When I turn something I'll try to remember to post it here.

One thing I did not mention is that once you get close to the shape/size you want, you will probably need to break out the 80 grit gouge to start the sanding.
 
I never thought about cutting off parts of our Christmas tree and putting them on the lathe. It would be quite the challenge to turn metal and plastic. ;-)

Does a rotating base count as "turning"?
 
Well-dried trunks can be sliced into cookies for wood burning or painting and used as ornaments. I also use mine for natural edge roofs, or bark-on bodies of bird house ornaments. The up-cycled x-mas tree-into-ornament angle is a selling point.
