Not sure about this one. There's nothing technically wrong with it but it's not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a brighter red and that the spalting would be more interesting. They can't all be gems, my wife likes it, but she's not very objective 😕

A couple of my first "kitless" ended in a shape similar to this one, pointy torpedo-shaped finials, and a very noticeable straight abrupt cap over the body. Like you, my impression looking at the result was ... meh. I'd suggest you could try experimenting with alternatives, I've grown out of these two features and I'm happier with the results (most of the time). With your blank, I agree more spalting and more saturated color would have been great but you gotta work with what you have :)

Ken that's a fine looking Pen. I think you have used the Spalting to enhance the design. I'm intrigued that I see more Pens just lately with no Clip.
For me its an essential part of a Pen.
But I do like this one.

I have been making a few Apollos, they have no clip. I consider them a desk pen.
