Just some chit chat for the day. Here are a few things I do not grasp the entirety of and wonder why.????? You can comment on each others and or add some of your own. Not so much as petpeeves but as why the hecks?? Now I am of the older range of years gone by so maybe this has alot to do with it but still WHY????o_Oo_Oo_O

Huge one:: what is the fascination of all these tattoos.?? You see so many people walking around with their bodies loaded with tattoos. Both men and women. Some are getting older these days and they are starting to look like blobs. If God wanted us to look like billboards I am sure he would have included a chalk board on our rumps. What the heck??

Next is: Reality shows. There is and always was the networks doing game shows which are great. But these shows of Bachelors and Bachelorettes and stranded islands and so many other weird shows are unwatchable. I am not including talent shows. They are OK. Exposing oneself for all the world to see just does not make sense.

Todays youth. What is the saying, today's youth is wasted on the young. Why do todays kids have to stand out by dying their hair crazy colors, wearing pants around their ankles, rings hanging out of every part of their bodies and then some and again the tattoo thing?? What the heck??

Last one for me is I am a baseball fan and a huge NY Yankees fan but this observation is sport wide and can not figure out why. I know the sport has changed alot over the years and will continue as they so call try to attract the younger crowds. Good luck with that. But my thing is what is with all the jewelry these guys wear on the field. I can think of no other sport where guys wear so many chains and now earrings. Many have Mr T starter sets hanging around their necks. That has to be an annoyance not only when pitching with them but also batting and throwing. You never seen this years ago. We all know they are all rich and is this their way of showing off their wealth?? Could you imagine wearing all that bling in a football game??

OK now it is your turn. What say you?? What the Heck??

JT, don't understand the Tats myself, especially on women.... you see a pretty young woman so tatted up, then wonder what they're gonna look like in 30 years? As my stepson has said, that humming bird on the breast is going to look like a vulture when she gets older.... Also don't understand the expenditure... Tattoos aren't cheap.

On "Reality" shows on TV... mostly why I have stopped watching TV... there is no such thing as "Reality" TV.... it's all scripted and I'm not so sure the Game shows aren't. I'll stick to NCIS which I know is fake, but interesting.

The dyed hair doesn't bother me so much, but the pants hanging below the buttocks is disturbing. As I get older I appear to be losing more and more of my butt so I have trouble keeping my waist band where it belongs -- at the waist.

Don't follow baseball so that's not an issue with me, but can't stand the glad standing in football where the players all run down to the endzone and pose after a play.... it's a game that they are supposed to be professionals to play professionally.... it's their job!

And not to get political, but what's with everyone wanting to carry a gun these days... we didn't have as much violence back in the wild west.... even then everyone didn't carry a gun, inspite of what all the western movies show.

Tattoos - Don't have any but they don't bother me unless they are in a place where there is no way too ever cover it up if needed (Neck, face, hands)
Reality shows - Don't care
Kids - it bothers me more that most of them can't speak proper English or read and write cursive.
Sports - Don't care.
Guns - have several but only carry when I am in a place where I feel it could be necessary and then only concealed.
In my day to day I don't feel a need but that is because of where I live.

Every generation is a club unto itself.
I remember in the 80s when I was 7 or 8, a teenage girl showed up at the pool with crazy colored hair. I think I overheard some of the moms say she was "ruining her life." Hyperbole to be sure, but I remember thinking it was a permanent mistake.
When I was in college in the 90s I saw kids getting tattoos and I realized that hair color was nothing. Tattoos last forever and were the permanent mistake.
Then in the 2010s I saw my kids' peers posting ill-conceived comments on the internet... sometimes with serious consequences. And I changed my mind again: tattoos are nothing... they can be removed... it's what's posted online that can be the real permanent mistake.

Tattoos are a fad that probably won't go away. Most of those will look horrible with age as already discussed. Also understand, tattoos are highly addictive. Almost every person I know who has gotten one cannot resist the urge to get more. I have see interviews with people in music talk about how it starts with one and just spreads like wildfire and almost isn't enough.

What really gets me is the piercings. Every time I see someone, typically 30 or younger, with a nose ring I imagine walking over and grabbing it as a exquisitely painful lesson as to why we put nose rings in powerful animals. These piercings will look worse than the tattoos all over their bodies in 15-20-30 years.

I can get past the tattoos but not all of the crazy piercings covering people's bodies today. In the end, it doesn't affect me and I truly am not bothered either way. This is a case where it isn't really hurting them and isn't per say "right" or "wrong" and just opinion. These are likely fads that will fade with time as those who have see the ending results are not beautiful and may tell their kids its a bad idea one day.

Tattoos have been around for a long, long time. It is a person's choice whether to get none, one, or many. Just like it is a person's choice to believe in whatever deity they choose. It is all a choice….. Who am I to judge? I grew up in an ultra conservative home run by my dad, a now retired sheriffs officer and boy if you didn't look like him, think like him or believe what he did, well, you were wrong! Ha! Needless to say we butted heads on occasion.

Reality TV, I do not watch. I find it boring and a waste of my time.

Today's youth! Does not every older generation (I am 53 BTW) say the same thing about the youth? This will always be the case. :)

Sports… if it is within the rules and doesn't affect their play then why does it matter?

My 2 cents, thanks!

I ditto post#1. There is a difference between a single tat or two and looking like a freak. I'm not trying to understand anyone anymore. Hollywood, athlete's and the media say it's ok to "Have a Look" (certain style). They do not have to perform or go on job interviews.
TV… save it. Forget it.
Sports…. I saw the best of times in my life. No dancing. No circus acts. Athletes that looked good… not like pimps are starred in a rap video.
Society today. .Save it. Forget it. Got worse in my lifetime.
May I add…. To the people that bring their BS comfort dogs into a restaurant…. May the dog get the runs in the car on the way home.

Absolutely none of these are consequential to me. I'm too busying worrying about working on developing my skills in penmaking and my other hobbies to care…
Remember you are just practicing your penmaking skills and never will become a pro that does not need to practice any more so slow down and smell the roses.

As the first to post about this on the Western side of the Atlantic, I agree with every word John.
I suppose its a sign of getting old when you begin to rant like we do!!!!
When I say "and another thing" or "In my day" the Grandkids know they are in for a good evening's entertainment, and to be fair they are interested in what occurred in the past-and what currently annoys me as an old bloke. What they don't appreciate is that when they are our age, they will be having the same conversation with their younger families.
Carry on ranting!!

I did not want to throw the gun thing out there because of backlash from the happy totters but agree way too much love for guns these days.

Also the cell phone thing. What the heck??? All you see are people walking around looking at their phones every minute of the day. People go to watch a ballgame and all you see are people on their phones. Are our lives that important that we need to communicate every single minute of the day. ??? I do not get it.

Hey old guys

A pet peeve I have is people dumping trash in the building parking lot. Presently a mattress and a couch sitting next to the dumpster. As well the guy across the street thinks the dumpster is his personal dumpster!

People pulling in and then beeping the horn to get their friend to come out. A good use for the cell phone.

People making judgments - HUGE ONE

I have some interesting conversations along these lines with my three daughters. 10 years apart from the oldest to the youngest with the middle on in between. Since they spent their formative years in Japan, they are a mix of their generation and Asian in their thinking. While they have no extra rings or tattoos, they do help me understand the mindset - a little bit. In my calling/work, cultural understanding (world view/mindset) is crucial.

That said, a major factor is who the baby sitter is, and who entertains the kids to keep them out of mom and dad's hair so that they can relax a bit after both have had a hard day (every day). TV, video game toys, cell phone games and school yards filled with kids whose parents did the same in letting the video toys do the entertaining and keeping the kids at bay.

Any of you know what is in that game "Grand Theft Auto" or something like that? Gotta rape someone to move up to another level. There was a fairly well known movie out back in the '80s for kids. We had it, then one day when it was on entertaining our youngest, I happened to look up and see a moon, and I am not talking about the earth's moon. We started WATCHING movies before we let our kids watch them after that.

Probably half of the current population of the USA was raised (entertained) on TV programs and gameboys that were used as baby sitters, and these forms of entertainments often had no, or very loose morals, and we are seeing today what happens without guidance. To instill a semblance of morals back into society now is to incite a riot!

But there are some great people out there with tattoos and rings in their noses willing to help - often quicker than some of us plain Janes and Jims.

Yikes, sometimes I forget the the main demographic of this forum. I just can't understand the mentality that apparently is very popular here, why does it matter what people do if it has absolutely no effect on you? Is it necessary to be so judgmental, I can't imagine what life is like to be so constantly focused on how other people live. I'm 27, I have tattoos, I'm also in the military, do my tattoos take away from my ability to serve this country? I don't think so and neither does uncle sam so why do you? I think a better mindset to have when you encounter something that you can't understand is instead of thinking that something is weird because it wasn't the norm in your generation ask the significance. As for some of the comments about my generation being ruined by tv, video games, whatever it is... Come on, civilization has progressively become less violent over time, lets go back to medieval days when you would have your limbs tied to 4 different horses and they would be made to run away, I wonder what movie or video game made them so violent back them. I wonder what movie hitler watched when he decided to do what he did, of course we all know grand theft auto is the cause of the awful torment that black people were subjected to right here in this country not even 100 years ago. Every generation blames the next generation because they just cant understand them and it's honestly really sad to see and witness here.

Just wait my friend you and your tattoos will get old too. Good luck.;);););)

I am sure there are some things that you do not understand either because you just mentioned one. Think about it. By the way not sure what being in the military has to do with any of this but just a thought. All this thread is a little conversation piece to break the thoughts of pen turning. It is posted under casual conversation thread. It is not meant to offend anyone.

Grand Theft Auto, Which I was told by a police officer contained the "rape" requirement to move on, I have not experienced playing that game. I am not putting this out there as a self righteous thought simply because I don't do it, I am putting blame on it because of the families I have to deal with and law officers have to deal with on a regular basis for kids that have committed suicide, or in jail or in institutions. It is not a few either.

Beware of thinking the world is OK with TV, games etc because you turned out fine. As an appropriate analogy, I remember reading of mountain climbing some 40 years ago or so, Mt Blanc, I think. The more people got killed, or accidents happened after a great sunny day when one guy started early, went to the summit and back down in one day. Then others tried to do the same thing. DIdn't happen. Accidents, deaths - because one came through the experience in great shape.

I see the damage it does, and where it leads, the families destroyed, and the families ask "WHY?". I hope you don't think that rape, even in a game is OK, it is not! It forms the mind! (Has nothing to do with race.) There is a much higher common denominator in destroyed families who did not watch the moral implications of unchaperoned tv, games, excessive alcohol drugs etc.

Cell phones….Not sure if most people have a stiff neck or simply enjoy looking at their crotch. Oh…. They're looking at the phone.

I'm not being judgemental, just making observations.... you are correct that none of this affects my life in one way or another,

but, I do admire a pretty girl and in my opinion all those tats and piercings detract from her beauty.... just my opinion which I am totally entitled to... an yes I am one of the old codgers... 80 years and counting.

And thank you for your service.

Thank you for serving. The tatt's are your business....your money. Does not reflect who you are. I have friends/neighbors/family that have tatt's. Some are fashionable. Some are overdone. As for my generation the people that got them were police or military. Motorcyclists and those that had too many drinks and went to the parlor. My friends son and daughter and daughter in law were Punkers and have tatt's...With that the parents (over 60yo) got inked. The father did his entire upper body and the artwork is weird. But I love the people and could care less what they do. They are wonderful decent people and long time dedicated sincere friends. I do not care what others do if they are not effecting me. And to be honest it's not my world anymore I'm just guest here. The world and society changed drastically in my lifetime that only my peers can relate to and understand. We did not shoot each other or fly off. Road Rage did not happen like it does. At 74 I loved the world I grew up in and still do somewhat ...but things changed. I see you have 6 posts...welcome to IAP.... a peaceful place where we have fun together.

I'm sorry but the whole video games cause violence is such a thinly veiled argument and I just can't take it when people use it. It comes down to parenting, and it goes back to my first post, look at the history of mankind, we have always been extremely violent and much more so in the past. If you don't teach your children right or wrong they are going to be influenced by their surroundings, a child can play the most violent video games and never hurt a fly, and people that were never exposed to things like that have done absolutely horrendous things.

There are good and there are bad, we are not disagreeing on that, we are not seeing eye to eye on the percentages of increase with such influence. You may stand on your beliefs, but I have had the benefit and experience of seeing the higher percentages at the number of funerals and counseling at homes and at schools. Believe what you want; Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao Tse Tong, Stalin didn't have these, but that doesn't mean that TV, games, excessive alcohol, drugs are not taking their toll at the funeral home at a much higher rate than 50 years ago.

You are right it comes down to parenting, and the parenting has not been with the kids, but letting TV and games do the parenting. You are proving my point, without parenting, the kids are getting their ideas from other places - where they spend their time - games, TV, on the playground. No thin veil there.

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

Does this sound familiar? it's a quote from Socrates.

It's so easy to be judgemental about things we don't understand and this post title contains "things I do not get". I don't like a lot of it, but generally it doesn't affect me. Generally. For the record, I'm 55.

Tatoos, I think, can be beautiful. To have your whole body covered seems a bit much to me. Definitely don't like them on the face. I even think drawn on eyebrows look ridiculous, but to each their own. I know some really great ladies that do it, so whatever (it's just a fad that's coming back around again anyway).
Piercings? Meh. Don't do anything for me, but I do often wonder how some people can drink without leaking.

Kids. Already been said, but every generation seems to be a bit further "out there" while trying to make themselves a place in the world. I can't help but picture Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino, though. And even kinda agree with him.

Reality TV? Don't watch it and don't care. It's all about the drama and ratings (ie. money). If there was a show about reality, nobody would watch it. Work, eat, sleep, repeat. Yawn. Even some of the shows where they build or refurb cars have to throw the drama of a deadline in there and pretend they might not make it in time. I've never been much for TV anyway. There is one show I can't get enough of lately called "The Chosen." (It's a religious show.)

Sports. Same as TV. Not much for watching. I think they are overpaid (good for them if they can get rich off of their skills, though). They are definitely idolized way too much, as are many Hollywood stars.

Video Games. I used to play a fair amount. Call of Duty was great, as were a few other war games and superhero type games. GTA is off the hook as far as morals go. In and of itself, I doubt it causes people to murder or rape, but it does make some very disturbing things seem like almost normal daily happenings. I mean they are if you are a cop, but it's not something normal people should become acclimated to. When are we going to have a video game that requires you to help people out instead of shoot them?

Guns. I carry one very frequently. The chance that I'll ever pull it out in public are slim to none and only in the most desperate situation. It's not worth the trouble unless it is the only way to avoid a loss of life. That brings me to my last, and by far most important point...

What really bothers me is people's lack of respect for each other, and for life in general. What is it that makes people want to shoot someone because they called them a name or hit on their girl? Put your pride in your pocket and get over yourself. There's far too much hate, intolerance, and selfishness in the world. I know it's always been there, but lately it's been so ridiculously blatant. Maybe if we show a little respect for those out there with different colored skin, tatoos, piercings, etc. will that respect come back to us? Maybe if we encourage each other not just to be ourselves, but to become even better versions of ourselves, and even help each other to do so without judging, we can somehow get along?

I am absolutely fine with my tattoos getting old with me because, just like when I first got them, I will still not care what other people think about them because they are mine, I didn't get them for anybody else. I'm not offended in anyway by your post but I figured if things like this bother you so much you wanted to write a long post about it I would also give my 2 cents.
Kendall, when I wrote this post I was not looking for right or wrong answers to come from this. It was written as a conversation starter. Maybe you too have something you would like to post and have us discuss. Again as I said this thread bothered you because you posted what you did to it. It was your 2 cents and you are entitled to do so and encouraged to do so. I do have the right to an opinion as well as you and I posted mine as well as you did. Others are doing the same. Age may play a factor to some extent but we all look at the world through different eyes which makes us all unique. Some people need to draw attention to themselves in different ways. Believe me when I say this you will get old and your opinions will change also. You say no now because you have alot of living yet to do. I sure do hope the youth of tomorrow makes a positive impact on the path we follow. Good luck to you.

Just for the record nothing I wrote has any effect on the way I choose to live my life either and never said that. These are observations from my perspective and typed out on a keyboard.

Yikes, sometimes I forget the the main demographic of this forum. I just can't understand the mentality that apparently is very popular here, why does it matter what people do if it has absolutely no effect on you? Kendall, how can we take you seriously when your questions end with only one question mark????? The bare minimum is 3, 4 is always preferable, which shows real authority and precedence. And really mate, please consider using exclamation points in your comments!!! Again, at least 3 is ok but really 4 is a minimum for precedence!!!!

Again, I was not offended at all by your post, I actually enjoy discussing topics like this because it's always good to hear other perspectives. What I meant was that you obviously felt strong enough about it to make a post and that is what caused me to make my post that disagreed, I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong just stating my opinions.

I think this one is at me. It is just a stupid habit I have. No hidden meaning. I have been called out on it before but as you see it did not change my thought process!!!! :):):) Went with 3 smiley faces when one would have done the trick too.

Huge one:: what is the fascination of all these tattoos.?: Yea, I don't get it either. Someday they are going to have freak shows again... and there will be the incredible, non-tattooed man on display.

Reality Shows: Yep... can't stand them either. Something my wife and I really miss... variety shows. We stream the old ones a lot... we wonder why no one has them now. Then realized today... they'd screw them up with horrid SJW stuff.

Youth: I scratch my head at that as well. But what is even worse are the 30-year-olds that do it too.

Baseball: Well, for me... most of the Sports have become wussified since the 60', the '70s, and '80s. I don't watch them... unless I see short vids on YouTube.

SJW = Social Justice Warrior ???

If it weren't for Wikipedia, I wouldn't know what that acronym means.
