One bowl today: Sweet Gum 4 3/4" x 2 3/4", Friction Finish

The other two bowls are Mahogany. One is 4" x 1 1/2" the other is 6" x 2" or thereabouts.

Mahogany has been a week or better in the process... of the finish. It is a lacquer finish. I don't really like turning Mahogany... it is pity and soft. But, I had a couple of small pieces so I went for it.

( If you are wondering: And yes, I still do pens... just taking advantage of this summertime to work on bowls.)

I love the outside shape of the gum bowl but not the inward lip ? It just seems a bit too steep and doesn't "flow " to me . Base of the gum bowl is excellent too , it's just that lip !

Nice work though and thanks for sharing , no offence intended

I will agree with that assessment. My wife thought it looked like a finger bowl... the kind you put water in on the table for a dinner.

Have you tried a "rolled edge "? Either with a mild bead outside so the lip overflows externally or just rolled to a semi circular finish?

The beaded edge can look a bit overpowering and it's got such a nice overall profile shape but it might work?

My descriptive skills are possibly not the clearest though!

I've done all kinds of edge treatments. Depending on what I think would look best (usually). This time, I was really working on learning and working out that 40/40 grind... that I wasn't paying attention to like I should have. And after flipping it over and finishing the bottom... for me, there is no going back. It is what it is.

totally agree with you . Once it's done, it's done.

Experience learned, only thing I don't apply that to is finishes. If I don't like it a resand and refinish sometimes occurs. I do leave it a few weeks first in case , with time, my view changes eg it goes darker as it sits a while.

what do you make of 40 / 40?

not tried it myself
I'm finding it much easier to use... and with more time with it... I think it'll be my go-to. On the inside of a bowl, it can make that bottom corner turn. So, as I found out with that last sweet gum bowl. A bottom feeder gouge is going to be a must.

For a while there... a 40-40 grind had to be done by hand... so I didn't use it. Ron Brown came up with a couple of set-up blocks to use with the Veritas Jig. And it is really easy to do with that.
