Was not long ago there use to be someone(can not remember who) on here that ran a contest for all new members who join in each month and awarded prises. I was wondering is that program still in effect because I am seeing a ton of new members joining every day. I sure hope some of these people do stick around and become active in the forum. We can always use new blood to carry on the traditions here and keep this great forum alive and well. Just asking.

What's sad is that there are a number of members who have never posted anything. Those are lost opportunities to share their ideas with us and for us to share our ideas with them. I'm not sure what the status of the New Member Prize drawing is. I would be willing to put together a package to donate to a new member for one month if that would help revive the program. I would be willing to do this annually. Anyone else?

Like John, I have observed quite a number of "newbies" (some with obviously well-developed skills already) joining our ranks here as IAP members.

I say .... BRING 'EM ON !! .... THE MORE THE BETTER !!!!

All of us benefit from this potential for injection of new ideas from new contributors !!!

And even if they are "silent" for a few years that is OK with me. . Their presence alone is an inspiration. .
It took me a few years to become vocal and now you can't shut me up !!! . LOL !!

I think you fall into the same catagory as me and I know with me it pisses some people off here for sure. Just willing to share that is all I want.

I was informed it was Edgar that ran that contest and not sure I have seen him here lately. Hope all is well. Amazing how someone who has been a big contributor for many years disappears and they get noticed for some little thing that was so common place. We fall into that complacency syndrome. Are you there Edgar?? Please check in.

Yep, those contests are my responsibility, and I'm still around. It's been a crazy year, and I haven't been able to keep up with my IAP duties as I would like - I'm also way behind on updating the Bushings & Tubes database for our apps.

All is well, but the small company (abt 20 people) that I work for is struggling just like most small businesses this year. We've been open all year, but the oil & gas slowdown has really hurt us, as well as everyone else in our industry. We had to lay off a few people & the rest of us have taken about a 20% cut in salary & benefits to help keep the company going.

Officially I am semi-retired and on a 3-day work week. In reality I have been working 5-6 days most weeks for the last 2-3 months trying to crank out 3 new products at "warp speed" to help bolster our marketing posture.

I could afford to retire, but our little company is like a family and I am the product development engineer for the company, so my services are critical right now while we try to battle through this period of time. Hopefully things will stabilize soon.

My apologies to all & especially to our new members for my scarcity. If someone would like to help with the new member contests for a few months, please let me know.

May you all have a happy, safe, & prosperous New Year
Edgar

Edgar, thanks for stopping by and explaining things and believe me I think everyone here respects your contributions here and I am sure at work as well. Good to read that you are doing well and staying safe. The contests are not important. Life if what matters and take care and continue to stay safe. Happy New Year. Sure hope this next one is far better than this last one. It can not get any worse.

I just join tonight and I'm excited to be part of the group. Can't wait to post I haven't been turning for very long and I don't have the best machinery. My wife was nice enough to purchase me a harbor freight mini lathe last Christmas and to tell you the truth I've been using it so much I can't believe it hasn't caught fire yet. At this point I'm all in I've got a vacuum chamber The pressure pot casting materials and about enough wood to build Noah's Ark! By the responses I see to Edgar I can tell this group has got a Lotta good people on it and I'm now happy to be a member. Not only am I new two wood turning but I'm new two forums as well. Here's a picture of the last pen I turned. Wish I would've kept the first pen I turned or took a picture. It kind a look like a train wreck full of hippies. Can't wait for advice from veterans like yourselves!

Looks good Kyle. You are well on your way. Take your time and enjoy the ride. Keep pushing yourself and the sky is the limit. Remember it is a small canvas that we decorate but it can make a huge statement. People will be clamoring for your work for we all use pens. Good luck and welcome to the site.
