I have been making a few of the Berea Cigar pens with the "double twist" transmission, which I do NOT like.

With this transmission, while twisting in one sense (either clockwise or counter) you go from a fully extended refill, to fully retracted, and back to fully extended.

I don't like that operation and would prefer a transmission that has extending and retracting the refill associated with opposite senses of rotation.

Is there an alternative transmission that can be substituted ?? . It must be fully compatible physically .... same length, same diam., same mounting threads.

Does anyone know, please ?? ... Or maybe a "Cigar-like" pen kit from a different manufacturer ?

The Woocraft kits used to be double twist, which were made by Berea, I believe. But I think they're all single twist now. I know for sure this kit from Bear Tooth Woods is single twist. I might have an unassembled Woodcraft kit, I'll see if I can find one.

Jim, You showed a pic of the BTW Antique Brass kit.

I looked at that on the BTW site ... the instructions are the actual Berea instructions which apply to the Berea Cigar pen kits that I am working with.
That makes me think that these BTW kits in fact use double twist transmissions.

And yet you say ... " I know for sure this kit from Bear Tooth Woods is single twist. "

So I am a bit puzzled.

Anyhow .... I'll wait for your response. . Thanks again.

I just looked at the Woodcraft site ... their blurb (at least for the kits I looked at) specifically says "double twist" transmission.

Their pics seem to indicate their kits are identical to the Berea kits. . . Hmmmm ..... puzzling also.

Mal--Exotic Blanks Cigars with the plated center bands are single twist, at least the ones i have are. Just checked and it interchanged with 3 of the Berea's i pulled out to check. Length seems to be spot on as well. Might want to check with Ed Brown to see if they're available separately. I believe it's this hardware: https://www.exoticblanks.com/cigar-hybrid-pen-kit-chrome-and-satin-chrome.html

All of the cigar pens we have made for us (product number starts with EK-c) have a single direction transmission.

Yes, they are (usually) available separately, presently out of stock. But our transmissions are interchangeable with Berea, same threading.

Thanks for this info, Earl !! :D

If I can buy just the single twist transmissions that would be great. . I will check with Ed.

I see that he does list the "double action" on his website, but that's what I am trying to get away from .... he just might have the single action also.

I have the BTW pen here, and it's definitely single twist. I just double checked.

Thank you for the assurance re: single twist, Jim !!

However, it would be good to know if the Big Ben from PSI has a single twist transmission which is physically compatible as a drop-in replacement for the Berea double twist transmission in their Cigar pen kits. . ( I am not expecting you to know that. )

@ed4copies

Thanks, Ed. . But does the actual part number always make it through ... in an obvious way ... to the buyer ? . ( for kits not actually sold by Berea ) .... Ans :- .... I don't think so, but I will keep my eyes open for the WCO145 number you gave.

It appears Bill at Wood-Write carries them.

@darrin1200

Thank you for this info, Darrin ..... a "close to home" (possible) solution that I overlooked ..... I will follow up on this !!! :D

EDIT :- I don't know if the Budget Cigar from WWW is compatible with the Berea Cigar. . They look close but if you compare the bushing sizes shown in the WWW bushing table, there are some differences. . The WWW table shows 2 sets of Cigar bushings: bushings 106A for the Budget Cigar and bushings 11A for the "Cigar" (possibly the Berea kit). . I know that the transmissions could be compatible even if the bushings aren't.
So I'll have to ask Bill if he can help clarify.
