Thank you for allowing us to IAP. My wife and I just started turning in May, and are looking for some guidance, or someone with patience to show us some tricks. We've pretty much taught ourselves when It comes to turning pens. Due to our odd schedules its sometimes difficult to find someone close by, in fact until now we had no idea that there were any pen turners in Colorado. So if anyone has the time to show a married couple some tricks please let us know

Welcome from Texas, Eric.

I pretty much learned how to turn by watching YouTube videos. I also attended a couple of demonstrations at a Woodcraft store.

There's also a lot of great tutorials in the IAP library, and don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. I've probably learned most of what I know just from reading the replies people post to questions on this forum.

Welcome from Tennessee...
I pretty much taught myself all I know (which may not be much) about wood turning... it's mostly practice to see what does and what does not work... I still go on You-Tube and watch others both for entertainment and to learn new techniques and methods.

I got into turning back in Houston when I made the mistake of admiring another turner's bowl work, commented to my wife that I wished I knew how to do that.... she called my son and told him I wanted a lathe for Christmas.... he bought one from Home Depot, too fast at the low speed to turn bowls, but great for pens.... he also bought some pen kits for me, so we started turning that Christmas afternoon in the garage.... that's been close to 20 years and I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it. I don't do pens much anymore, mostly bowls, pepper mills and a few hollow forms.
You may eventually need to go to a Re-Hab center, as this is a very addictive hobby.... Most fun you can have with all your clothes on.

Thank you guys, my wife April and I are excited to get to see the cool things everyone makes. I just tried a scallop pen out of a couple of scrap, and I was amazed that it actually worked, now I have to change the sizes of the inserts that I used to get it right
