The picture below shows a turned blank I made with the intent of pairing it with a Nautical kit. I was really super happy with how this pen barrel looked as I turned and finished it. When I started assembly it was pretty obvious that it just looked awful with the hardware I had in mind. Fortunately I had not assembled it to the point I could not remove the clip mechanism. If you have ever tried to disassemble a Nautical or fly fishing pen you know what I mean. I really hate to relegate the barrel to the scrap pile, so I am searching for an alternative kit that I might be able to use with it. I'll look through the IAP bushing and tube app, but, if any of you seasoned veterans out there have any ideas I'd love to hear them. The barrel is 2.62 inches long and has a 3/8 inch tube. The length could be reduced somewhat and there is sufficient "meat" on the barrel that it could be turned down (likely needed if a suitable kit could be found).

Thanks for looking.
Larry

Greetings from Nebraska!

I really like the wood, metal, and plastic segmenting. According to Penn State Industries the Nautical Twist Pen uses the same bushings as their Majestic Squire, Art Deco, and Dog pen kits. I think your blank paired with the Majestic Squire in Antique Brass and Pewter would make a handsome pen.

I agree with Dave.

Your segmented blank is a very handsome piece and would look good in several applications.

Don't forget to show us !!!! :D :D

The tube on the Majestic Squire is only 2" long, so you would lose most, if not all of your segmenting. It doesn't specify tube length for the Art Deco. The Dog pen tube is 3.31", so your blank wouldn't be long enough.

Thanks for the replies. After getting over my disappointment and embarrasment I looked through the B&T app. I completely concur with all Dave said. The only option I see so far is to lose a good piece of the blank as is and try to put some new segments on the bare tube. I'll keep on looking. Hate to lose the too much of the center part, but some is better than none.

Larry I'm late to this thread but why not just part off the wood and add segments in a complimentary color... or black. Black is classic.

@Larryreitz

Having seen that this thread has been "revived", I have re-read all the posts.

Larry, I fail to see why that beautiful blank which you have made is, in your opinion, unsuitable for a Nautical pen kit in either pewter or brass.
The blue-green swirls in the blank certainly look very "nautical".

To me, that blank-kit combo should make an absolutely gorgeous pen. . I think plenty of people would absolutely love it.

Can you explain why you do not think so ?

Hi Mal, and thanks for your followup. I'm not sure I can explain exactly what my objections were. My best guess is that I thought it looked to "busy" around the finial and clip. I did a lot of searching for alternative hardware to use and pretty much drew a blank on that. So, I was thinking if I should just go with it as originally planned and your followup got me off the dime. I am attaching a front and a back picture. Maybe that may explain my original reaction. The more I look at it, the less objectionable it seems. I think I need to remember that not everyone sees things the way I do and I'm sure as H--- not always right.

Thanks again for the nudge.

Hi Larry, and thanks for complying with my pleading to complete the pen !! LOL !

I think you have a compellingly attractive pen there !!

I can now slightly see the "busy-ness" issue, but that's kinda what nautical themes are all about.
In this case it is totally acceptable and interesting, in my opinion.

The colors and patterns in your blank are a perfect match for "nautical" and the wood end caps bring to mind voyages of discovery in wooden vessels well before the steam age. . I think your pen has a very romantic appeal, actually !!! . I can picture swarthy seamen scampering over ropes on the deck and scaling the masts to bind the sails before a gathering gale !!

Very well done !!!
