I don't make many slimlines; this shows how I like to make them when I do. . The wood on both pens is Cocobolo. . These are Berea kits.
Probably others do a similar modification. . I can't remember if I copied anyone else's design, and if I did, who that was.
I apologize for the photo having some grunge/dust in it. . Don't take many photos and don't like dusting !!

The lower barrel is made as usual but oversized and with parallel sides towards the top end. . I cut the upper barrel about an inch longer than the normal length and shape it to overlap the lower barrel. . In the overlap region, I bore it out just enough to form a sliding fit over the lower barrel. . I don't use the center band. . The finished pen pulls apart in the usual way to replace the Cross refill.
Finished by burnishing and then using some nitrocellulose followed by more burnishing ( ... it has been few years since I made these.).

Just thought I would show as a little contribution to help relieve some of the collective boredom IMG_1410CR.jpg

Super idea Mal. I really like the finished pens. The larger barrel could be a different / contrasting wood or even Corian.
That's right, Joe. . There are a lot of possibilities. . Could even make the largest part in the center from yet a different material and glue onto the top barrel. . Probably best to have the top and bottom the same material with a contrasting large center. . I should try that.

Mal, nice work, I like your attention to detail, this is why I like the slimline. Since they are so much cheaper than the Euro Designer and I've got hundreds of 7mm tubes(seems that way) so I'll cut the bottom tube same as the euro barrel and turn thre top using the euro bushing. Most of the time I'll turn a contrasting wood for a center band and I've got a customized Euro! Like I said I like slimlines!

The three aspects I personally don't like with slimlines are 1. the end cap and 2. the striped clip and the straight nose cone.
These three customizables plus your idea Mal would make a the slimline into the chameleon of pens. Designs unlimited.

Hank, I absolutely hate that black stripe clip on the slimline. I refuse to make one. I really like the clip on the fancy slimline and make plenty of those. Like you I'm not wild about the, as you say "nosecone" but it's what we get. These are two of the styles I like to use. I can't stand "wasp" or bloated styles.
