USS Missouri Deck Wood

It seems that deck wood from the USS Missouri is going to be hard to come by real soon.

I visited the USS Missouri today & went into the souvenir shop after I finished my tour. I asked the lady in the store if they had any pieces of deck wood for sale. She showed me a few small pieces that were about 1/4" to 1/2" thick in a locked display case.

I asked her if they had anything a little thicker and explained that I would like to make some pens from it. She said that someone else was looking for the same thing earlier in the day and that she had a box with the rest of her stock in the storeroom. She went to get it and let me rummage through it to find pieces I liked.

She also explained that when that box was gone, they would no longer be able to sell them any longer. In the future, only "major donors" will be able to buy pieces of deck wood.

I rummaged through her box and bought pretty much everything she had left that was about 3/4" thick.

This topic has gotten a lot of attention recently - historical military wood. This is a case where YOU are now able to have a clear and documentable ability to make COA's with proper confidence. This is very different than those that are peddling blanks made from "xyz..." obtained from "someone" I know, with no documentation that is truly verifiable. A receipt from the museum, pictures of the blocks, a picture of the block in blank form all lend to a higher confidence level.

I'm not a "major" donor but I did purchase the last plank available according to the lady I talked with, maybe we talked to the same lady. The plank measures 14"L x 4.5"W x 2"T. It cost me just at $550.00. Good score on your part Edgar, you probably just purchased the last available Teak decking for some time. Enjoy your trip, I'll be in the Islands during Sept/Oct.

Great score on your part, Tom. Yes, might very well have been the same lady. She still has about 50 or so of these little blocks, but most are 1/4" to 1/2" thick. There are certainly some suitable for making slims left in the box, but not much else. There were still a few pieces about 3/4" that I didn't take because they weren't quite long enough for a Sierra. All of it would be good for segmenting of course.

These blocks are not listed on their web site, but if anyone wants to buy some while they are still available, just call the gift shop. They are $10 each.

I also picked up some First Day Covers of the 75th Anniversary of The Missouri that would go great with a pen. Those should be on their web site.
