Hi all this is such a great resource for information. Going today to purchase my Lathe it will be a Rikon 70-1218VS from Lee Valley I jumped on the Cyber Monday gift card deal buy $1000 gift card for $850 and the lathe is $525 so leaves room for turning tools. I have decided to go with Carbide tipped as I am not ready to invest in sharpening tools at the moment. (yes I know carbide needs sharpening but I can purchase replacement tips) I hope this lathe will be sufficient for pens, rings etc. Also made my purchase from penblanks.ca for supplies, they were quick at shipping and very reasonable prices.

Welcome. I have a Rikon 70-050VS which has been replaced with an update model. The 5 year warranty helped in the decision.

Hi Len welcome from the UK

I still say a negative rake HSS scraper is handy or. round skew which you can use as a skew or scraper ( I know sacrilege but it works , ) just for the final finishing touch especially on plastics before sanding . If you hone it well enough and use it delicately enough you can go straight to polishing ( not often I must admit ).

Lee Valley trying to sway me the other way on tools!
Several folks on here, myself included...started with a set of carbide tools bought off Amazon..its a Savannah 3 piece set, handles, cutters, case for $99.00 for the complete set that has a round, square & diamond tool. Its reasonably priced enough that if you end up not liking them you can easily resell the set.

Thanks Darrin "Birthday Bash" what is that?

It's our annual celebration of the starting of the forum. It happens throughout the month of February, and is filled with contests and games.

It's a great time, and has something for everyone. All that is required, is the desire to make a pen.

Hope to see you there.
