I have purchased from you before. I have sold a lot of pens made from this. People love it and they really like getting the report along with it.

The pens are beautiful when done!

I would also like 10, mixture of all black and black/brown is fine.
I agree with JuicedSS--the ones i've had in the past are nice. Can't say i've sold a lot of them, but i've sold or gifted every one i've made so far@@

I just want to add a positive endorsement of @Twvaman. I bought two sets of his bog oak pen blanks, one via PM/PayPal here at Penturners.org and another set via eBay. Both were mailed by Twvaman from Ireland and arrived in California in about a week.

-> This is the only bog oak I have found anywhere that has been scientifically dated. That is important and special to me. By the way, the dating was done by comparing the grain pattern to known tree ring spacing, not through carbon dating. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrochronology

The blanks are nice. They are dry/brittle with a charcoal-like sawdust, but easy to turn nonetheless. Use sharp tools and a light touch. (Everybody says that for every pen blank, so what's the use?)

Bog Oak Hint:
As soon you turn the blank to a cylinder, try sanding and applying a few different finishes before you turn it all the way down to your pen shape. When I applied a GlueBoost CA finish, the blank became almost black and lost a lot of grain appeal. Oak has open grain, and I think the pen looks better if the grain "slots" show up. CA fills them and makes the pen look too smooth and black-but-bland.

Photos:
* Faith, Hope, Love pen, made with Twvaman's dark (black) bog oak. I keep notes. This pen had a bad CA finish. I sanded it off and applied Hut Crystal Coat. The pen was made last May.

* Celtic pen, made with Twvaman's lighter bog oak. The pen was made last May and finished with Hut Crystal Coat.

Mike--got you paid.
Some good looking pens posted here. This Irish Bog Oak is one of the few woods that i don't add a film-forming finish to. It is rare for most people to be able to ever touch anything that is 200 years old. It's almost impossible for even archaeologists to be able to touch something 6,500 years old with their bare hands. The look on people's faces when i hand it to them is priceless. Worth watching the bare wood age in use as a pen for folks to be able to share the experience of holding something that old with their friends.

If you are looking for really really really old pen blanks, I discovered ancient kauri pen blanks at my local Rockler store a few weeks ago. They are advertised to be 30,000 to 50,000 years old - the limits of carbon dating. I bought one to try, just for the fun of making a pen from wood so old. The blank is one of two blanks that were in the store, both of them very white and very plain, with almost no grain, color, or other features. I have not turned it yet. The photos of the blank and customer-made pen on the Rockler website are much darker than the blank I bought:

If you are looking for the oldest possible material for pens, you can buy fossilized mammoth tusk, but it is much more rare, expensive, and delicate than the ancient kauri blank. It could be older than the ancient kauri pen blanks, but not for certain without dating it. The last mammoth colony died out less than 4,000 years ago.

Anyone got pen blanks older than ancient kauri or mammoth tusk?

I bought from you before and am more than happy with the blanks. I would like 20. 10 of the dark and 10 of the light brown. Send me an e-mail. All my info is the same as before.

I received my order and all the blanks were there. The post office was a little rough and the package was torn open. There was no COA sheet. I got hold of Mike at Irish Bog Oak and he said he would email them to me. He tried several times and failed. He asked for another email address and this one worked. It then was emailed to me and it came through. I would like to thank Mike for following through. He will see me again as a customer.
