I ordered some shorts of Mallee burl in an order and have been hoping to use them; finally they were up in the shop. The red burl with sapwood was easy to deal with as it did not have voids. The brown not so much as there were deep voids that were a challenge not to blow out.
I think they will sell quickly this holiday season.

Beautiful pens, and I think your finish has a lot to do with it. I also like the overall shape of the barrels, to my eye they're perfect for the Sierra type kits.

Thanks a lot. I have a relatively new technique where I get the barrel round with a sharp roughing gouge but work the edges first. This is helping with woods that chip out at the ends. Then the rest of the edges and the middle are removed with a skew. The rounded bulge shape is reduced to satisfy my eye slowly with the skew.

Great work, I haven't seen many of those shorts turned into pens but I like what I see.

Interesting that you have found more cracks/voids on the Brown than on the Red Mallee root burls, I have found that processing them, I seem to get bigger chunks that look solid from the brown than the red...!

Cheers
George
