Sea Urchin box

One of the demo classes that I took at SWAT this year was making a box using a Sea Urchin. I bought some several years ago, but never got around to making anything with them, so now is as good a time as any. I had some black wood, not sure what species, but that's what used for the base, top and finial of the box. This is also the first time turning a finial. On the bottom of the finial, I placed a small piece of abalone. A big thanks to Sally Ault for an excellent demo. I hope to make several more of these.

Beautiful!. Did you "treat" the urchin to make it more durable?

Excellent turning. For the first time turning a finial you did extremely well. The overall profile is well balanced and the abalone is a great element.

Thanks for the comments, they are appreciated. I soaked the urchin in super thin CA glue to harden it
up, not sure the long term effect of it, will see. In Sally's demo, she fills the inside of the urchin with the
spray expanding foam, but you really have to careful not to overfill it and get it on the outside of
the body, forget about getting it off if you do. The little piece on the bottom of the finial is a piece
of abalone shell.

Did you make just a top collar or make it as a bottle box to fit into the shell as Sally does?

The finial fits down into and on top of the collar.

That's just beautiful! Boxes are my favorite project, I hope I get the chops up to make one like that some day. Excellent job on your first finial too.
