I have a glacia kit that I am going to be using for a theme pen. It has a decorative band that will be replaced. There is also a decorative medallion on the top of the cap that I would also like to replace. I have never tried to remove a medallion I know I've see it mentioned here before but I don't think I've see how. Any help or experience on this would be appreciated. This is a picture of the kit and the cap.

I've never tried to remove that medallion so don't know how it is held but if it's like the Jr Gent the medallion will have a stem on it. You drill a hole in some hardwood just big enough to support the chrome piece yet let the medallion pass through. Place it over the hole and hammer it out with a pin punch just big enough to sit inside the diameter of the stem.

Wondering if a Dremel using heatless wheel/stone would work. Would hold the pen with a wet paper towel to keep pen body cool... protect your hand and blank.

Just looked at the kit and unfortunately there is no stem on the inside to punch out.

That is not a bad thought. Hopefully there is someone here who has tried it. I only have one more kit left and I am a little hesitant to try that with out a back up.

If the cap has a stem maybe drill lightly until it's off. A Dremel with a foot pedal might work best.

Have no idea what Pete is talking about stems. But most kits if that medallion as you call it is a separate part from the cap and is not a cast item that is a complete one piece, then it usually can be punched out as in Jr gents and majestics. You need a punch that is about the size of the medallion. I say this because the edges of the medallion will be the most solid and that is the part you want to hammer on. As someone suggested it would be nice to do this on a piece of wood with a hole that will support the outside ring of the cap edges but allow the medallion to fall through the hole when punched out.

Now I say all this with caution because I have never used this kit and do not know the construction of it. So if it fails it is all on you.

I will say the knot system looks good and well done. A little too busy for my taste but well constructed from what we see. Good luck with this venture. Next time you may want to rethink the kit you use or try doing the knock out thing before hand to see if it will work the way you want.

You might try a heat gun and see if there is some bonding material/glue that could be released by mild heat. P

Ever thought about calling the vendor you bought it from? They might have a very quick answer or explanation on how to remove it.
I had not thought about calling the vendor that is a good idea.

That is a great idea I like the idea of a good non destructive test. I will probably try some heat tonight when I get home.

As a vendor, I am very reluctant to give any advice on modifying pen kits. Why? Cause if it doesn't work FOR YOU, I will then be blamed for the failure, and additional parts will be "expected". Manufacturers will replace parts that were defective, but there are no manufacturers that provide replacements for "failed modifications". We have to take apart good kits, just as you would have to!

Well Ed you have just saved me a phone call as this kit and most all of my kits come from you. The wife wants those M&Ms. She never fights me about needing to place an order.

Honestly, I have never tried to modify the glacia--it was not yet "invented" when I made pens for retail sale.
In looking at the pen top, it would appear to be two parts, but the insignia MAY be part of the inside cylinder,
so knocking it out will remove the whole inner piece, rendering everything unusable. I would expect this will
be unsuccessful. But, even if it is unsuccessful, it may lead to a solution--the inside piece with the decorative
design may be able to be reinserted with a different top--considerable effort for which you should be significantly
compensated in your end retail price.

It does have the "stem" referred to above, which is welded in, but I believe this holds the two assemblies together,
whereas in the jr. gent it is just the stem for the decorative piece.

When I did modifications, I would weigh the cost of replacement ($8 in this case) against the amount I could add
to the retail price for a totally unique pen (for me this started at about $50). So, if I anticipated success at the end of the
rainbow, I could waste 5 kits and still come out ahead. Food for thought??

Just my observations
