I found I made a whole bunch (scientific measure of quantity) of rather plain curly maple blanks. After reading a post a couple of weeks ago where a turner had great success using a TransTint Blue to dye a blank, I decided to give it a whirl. Below are 3 Barons each with a different treatment: left-most pen is Silver Baron with Blue tinted curly maple; the center pen is a Chrome Baron with Vintage Maple tinted curly maple; the right-most pen is a Titanium Gold Baron with Vintage Maple tinted curly maple over-dyed with Blue. All pens were finished with CA, 20/20, and Renaissance Wax.

I like all 3, I'm going to look into giving that a try. I have a crap ton (another measurement used often) of service berry spalted and curly.

It is really a hoot. You can take a blank with not much obvious character and totally transform it. Thanks for the kind words.

Yes sir it is. Trap shooting, you may have used Shilen barrels in Ennis.

Forgot to say, I'm reading through search results on tinting now for guidance on how to and where to buy.

Don, you can get the same effects with dollar store markers, that's how I've tinted mine in the past. I'd post a couple, but I have none on hand. All I do, is turn the blank to size, and color it with the lathe in slow speed. You can color it to whatever depth you want the color to be, it all depends on how many times you move the marker back and forth across the turned to size blank.

Just got back from local hobby store where I got confused; most of their markers are oil based; pretty sure that's not what I want. Since the tint is let down with alcohol, seems like the marker should be alcohol based? I think?

I'll get to dolla gen tomorrow. Thanks!

It was Lucky2 who mentioned using markers, and it is something I'm looking into. As I explore the dying of wood blanks, I'm open to the most economical/practical ways of achieving a quality product. I haven't been able to find the range of colors that I would like to have; I did make it to a couple of dolla generals today and found red, green, blue and black - we'll se what that produces.
In experimenting, if you start before your wood is at final dimensions, you can always turn the blank down some more as the dye penetration from what I've seen is minimal into the blank.
As an aside, I've also determined that the use of TransTint isn't that bad on a per pen basis as you only us a few drops. However I do not believe it is anywhere as economical as marker pens.
