I have some very good centers for turning, but I thought the various cones would be good for supporting my work.
The price seems right? They half price / free shipping.

What do you think?

Tony, if spending the $31 is no issue for you, why not give them a try. I have no experience with these, but I think they might come in handy sometimes. JMO

The cones in that set seem to all be 60 degree. I have found a need for more sharply angled cones .... 30 degree.

Reason ... when turning pen blanks between centers using cones as the centers, you often want to turn (and taper) right up to the end of the blank.
Your cutting tool (especially round carbide cutters) can get extremely close to the cone face of a 60 degree cone. I have even crashed into the cone face

In your shopping, if you find a shallow cone, like 30* that you can use as a dead center in your headstock, please let me know. Could be v. useful.

I have not found one. So I am thinking I may have to make one for myself on my metal lathe.

I've got pretty much that same set. I bought it to use originally with my metal lathe but now it works with metal and wood. Though the set I have comes with a really small point, it looks smaller than the one on the peachtree set, and this is the attachment I use mostly on the wood lathe if I'm coming down to a taper. I've found as magpens says above that if not very careful I'll run my carbide tool into the larger cones. With that said I do like the set and would replace if it failed...and peachtree is a better price than I paid some years back.

Thank you Tony for bringing this set to light. Will order a set from Peachtree if shipping to Canada is reasonable.

Showing a price of $66.50 for the set. Please show link for $31 if you can. Thank you.

I have the Nova live center system. It costs a tad over double this price (in the $75 range) but has several really useful features that I don't see in this one. There is an inverse cone (that is useful for pushing against a ball, for instance), there is a small diameter 60 degree center (Mal described the value of this), and a threaded end which will let you make pretty much any shape you want.

Thank you Duncan. I bought this about two year ago from Amazon. The package arrived opened and the parts were all out of their packaging - the inside of the box was covered in lubricant. There was probably nothing wrong with anything, but I sent it back to Amazon. It was the only time that I ever had a problem with their (Amazon's) shipping/packaging. I should have just asked for a replacement, but I really didn't gave a need for it. I only have Nova chucks and jaws; I am very please with their stuff.

I purchased this set a few years back and found the set I received to be inferior in quality as far as the fit of the inserts. My set seem to have excess play in the inserts and the hole of the bearing so they do not sit true to center all the time. I just chalked it up to the old "you get what you pay for". Your mileage may vary.

I agree; my expecations are low, but I will not be using them for precision - just to support . Thanks for the feedback.

I've had that same set set for years, but it is not Nova....it's some off brand....but it really works well. I use it often with no problems. I think $33 is an awesome price!!

I have had the nova set for about 3 years now and if I remember correctly it was about $75 but the one thing I will say is it is a very well built kit. I have done things to it that for sure should have not been done and it still works as good as the day I picked it up. Also all the different tips for it have been really useful in lots of applications. One big difference I see from the one from peachtree vs the nova is points on the nova mount in the live center using an short MT2 keeping them running true. It also means you can put it in the head stock as the dead center as well. That is just a couple of many different things you could do with it. In my opinion completely worth the extra money.
