I got a little better photo today with the sun being out.
The purple is throughout the blank but, it only shows where the light hits the surface. It actually has blue and red in it as well.

And this will be my next patient to go under the scalpel.
The photo looks brown but, it's a red, orange, and yellow based on the direction of the light.

It's another one of my casts.

I'm trying to figure out how to take a decent photo. Read some stuff; I don't really understand most of it.
Do camera's wear out? It was suggested that maybe it's my camera since it's almost as old as I am.

Anyway, Here are two more photos. I can't get them as clear as I would like, even with a tripod, and I can't get the color to represent what my eyes tell me I see.

I'll probably just give up on the photos. It's much too aggravating trying to show a pen. I'll make them, and let the people that receive them, enjoy how they look.

Pen looks nice! And I am with you on being tired of trying to take a decent photo. I've read a bunch of stuff, played with settings, changed lighting and backgrounds all to no avail.

When it is sunny out and I take the pics outside, I have the best results. For some unknown reason I get food results taking the picture of the pen in my hand outside. As soon as I use a background and prop outside, on the same day literally minutes after the picture in the hand, I get poor results.

it's the main reason I quit selling on ETSY and quit posting here, for the most part.

Nice Pen, and Blanks John.
Direct Sunlight, will give strong Glare, Shadow, and High Reflection,
My photographs are nothing to write home about, but I am happy with them.
I take mine under a Translucent Patio Roof, that diffuses the sunlight, eliminating the Glare, Reflection, and Strong Shadow, I use a light weight sheet of Polystyrene used as Protection inside a large Carton.
I put my pen onto the Foam Board, and take the Photograph, I do get a faint shadow but the White Foam tends reduce the shadow.
I am not suggesting that you go out and get a Patio Cover, but there are sheets of plastic that will reduce the strength, and glare of the Full Sun. Play with it, you will find some satisfaction.
I am certain that there are a number of articles, in the Library here that will also give you Guidance.
Congratulations,
Brian.

It doesn't seem to matter if I'm out in the sun or in a dark room. The colors don't show, it's not clear, and just doesn't capture the overall appearance.
The first photo was in the sun. There are actually about four colors that show in the blank when holding it but, I can only capture the main color in a photo.

I'm not going to bother with taking photos anymore. The aggravation takes the enjoyment out of making the pen. I know what it looks like, and that's all that matters. They may not impress anyone on here but, that doesn't matter. They look nice in person, and that's who needs to be impressed; the person holding it, and using it.

I'll let everyone know if the above blank looks nice or not, without trying to take a photo.

Back to CNC, I understand that.

Thanks Brian. I appreciate your optimism.
I've read several different things about how to set the camera, and none of it makes much sense to me, and after trying different camera settings, the photos all look the same.

My pens aren't worthy of more than gifts. I don't spend days cutting, and gluing a bunch of tiny pieces, or wrapping the tube with a bunch of odd things to cast. It's just a pen that will be given as a gift, and likely not appreciated for what went into it.

Welcome back!

Today was much nicer, and tomorrow is supposed to be better. We didn't have the sleet/snow but it was windy, rainy, and cold.
