Hey All

So, tonight I set out to make a Golden Amboyna Burl Fountain Pen and I have to say it was quite a challenge.

The wood carved easily enough and my meter indicated it was only 6 to 7% moisture, but I had a very hard time getting my CA finish to set properly. Each coat took 5+ minutes to harden even with accelerator and made a very bumpy finish. (Kind if like the skin of an Orange.) 14 coats later and I managed to micro-mesh and Plasti-X it to a glossy yet slightly bumpy finish. (To be completely honest I love the final product as it adds a certain character to the pen and makes it look and feel very nice.)

Looks fantastic!
Did you get those blanks from a Canadian fellow on eBay? If so, he offers golden ambyona burl blanks, some stabilized with pentacryl and I wonder whether that treatment could be causing the issue with CA. I have some blanks from that source, I used some of them without CA finish issues like you are describing, but I haven't kept track whether the ones I used were treated or not.

I did get it from him. He's a great source of well priced blanks here in the north.

I know I've got a wood collecting problem when I can identify the source of the blanks used to make pens or resell them here. I see folks reselling blanks from "thewoodguy1" and "exotic-wood-n-burls" allll the time here on IAP.
