I was looking through the library and couldn't find the answer to this. I have a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the basement and am wondering if it's interchangeable with denatured alcohol for the cleaning of pen blanks. Cleaning only, not consumption Thanks for any help.

The short answer is they are NOT the same. Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl (sp?)alcohol; denatured is ethanol alcohol. Rubbing alcohol will not work as well (if at all) for cleaning tubes.

Rubbing alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol is usually about 70% but can also be found as 90% and 99% alcohol.
DNA is ethyl alcohol which has been "denatured" by the addition of methanol and other ingredients to make it undrinkable.
Both contain a small amount of water.
If you want to clean you blanks, use acetone or better yet, use CA accelerator.

Since denatured alcohol is hard to find in Canada I use isopropyl all the time. I get the 99% pure stuff at one of the local farm supply outfits.
