Burb,

You can use a bottoming tap, however as you said, it is easier to use a plug tap. If you are concerned with the Bock or Jowo taps, a plug tap will work fine since you will run the thread all the way thru the hole.

The bottoming triple lead taps are used when you want to make transparent bodies for you pens. They show up a nicely threaded hole instead of having partially cut threads showing.

Thank you sir for your explanation. I will stick with just the Plug Taps for my three choices as I think that will work just fine for me, at least for a while.

I just caught wind of this thread and have been wanting to try my hand at kit less for a long time. I would love to get in on the action but don't know what I want/need and won't be able to figure that out until Sat or Sunday 7/29 or 7/30 because I am out of the country at the moment.

Please send me the spreadsheet if there will be time to jump in after this weekend.

In past buys the taps were all grouped together (bottoming, plug, starting) to get the numbers for price discount. Does this maker differentiate between them?

IVO the required breakout pricing for the different tap styles, why not consolidate the buy for taps into all taper or all plug to get the lower quantity price. Then each individual can grind off the tap tip to convert the "Pointy" tap to a plug or bottoming tap.

Is that too hard to do, both in the buy coordination, and in the grinding ability for non-machinist pen turners?

If this is a silly idea, I will voluntarily proceed to the penalty box.

Andy, you will need a tap either a plug or bottoming or maybe both and a matching die. You will also need to pick up your choice of nib taps whether you get them for the #5 or #6. I am buying one plug tap for each of the Jowo and one for the Bock since I already bought one.

The size of the triple thread will depend on what size pen you want to make. If you look at the current standings, it seems that the M12 is the most popular size, that equates to 12mm. Next in line is the M13, which equates to the 13mm.

Hopefully this helps you with your decision.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Steve's idea? Seems legitimate to me, but I've never done it. As long as you have a matching die, it should work fine.

My experience is limited to shortening bolts.

Those times I've tried it without a couple of nuts already on there (to chase the threads by removing them after it's been on the grinder) the results have been bad.

I use my taps and dies to cut plastics, maybe brass or aluminum occasionally. I have no intention of using them on hardened steel (such as chasing the threads on a tap after it has been ground down.)

In other words, I think it's a bad idea.

I do know that if you try to touch the threads on a tap using a matching die, you are in for trouble due to the heat treating that the tap goes through.

As far as could we take every one who wanted a bottoming tap and add them to the plug tap, yes that would be very easy to do.

I have been tossing around buying a couple of different bottoming taps, but I have really been spending toooooooo much money lately. I don't know if I should afford it right now!

Here are the current numbers as of this morning.

View in Gallery

The numbers went down because I had a duplicate entry in my spreadsheet.

Also, there are several people who indicated that they wanted to be in on the buy, who have not indicated what items they wanted.

Hopefully they will respond with what they are interested in and the numbers will go down. That is why I cannot state the final cost until everyone completes the official spreadsheet and returns them to me.

Also, here is what the discount percentages look like for the current numbers:

As this shows, we are looking at savings of over 64% for all items.
