I saw this new kit in the Bash and immediately ordered it. Even nicer than I expected. My first thought was to use Damascus steel but the piece I had was a bit too short. I remembered I had a large block of Micarta in my knife making supplies and decided to give it a go. The Micarta is made of layers of Black canvas fused together under pressure and temperature with a phenolic resin. The canvas gives a very unique pattern. It turns, sands, and polishes like a nice hardwood. It is really tough stuff and impervious to most chemicals. I dry sanded to 500 grit and polished with pink rouge on the buffer.

That pen is very beautiful !!!!

I would like to get some of the kits.

Can you please specify the tube length ... I understand it is a 27/64" tube ... and also the finished diameter of the barrel .... Thanks.

Thanks, Dan.

But that does not include the tube length ... which I would greatly appreciate knowing if you could provide, please.

Great Pen, Danny.
Excellent Blank Material, Fit and Finish.
Love the Barbed Wire, as shown with the Knife, would also make a great Blank, if thick enough.
Thank you for showing,
Brian

Thanks very much for measuring, Dan. . That gives me the info I need :)
I was hoping it was right around the 3" length.

I measure the body at 3.0". The tube might be slightly longer as I sanded the ends square and may have nicked the tube.

Gorgeous looking pen . Love the way that material turned out. Really eye catching.
May I ask what method you used to do the finish on your pen ?

No finish applied. Just sanded and buffed.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I've used Micarta for many knife handles and really like how it turns. I use to make my own, I might have to try making some pen blanks.

I assume the resin is what is polishing??? Does it come up to a high shine???

Looks good from here.

It will take a similar shine to acrylic when sanding and polishing with the same technique. You can also stop sanding at a lower grit to add some grip with a light buff to still add shine. Paper Micarta shows almost no grain, it makes a nice substitute for ivory or water buffalo. Their is also one made from linen with a very fine grain. The resin is a pressure/temperature set phenolic. It is extremely durable. Colors are very limited. It's made for electrical insulating boards.
