Virtually all of our blanks are donated. Most are not identified. I can identify most of them, just from experience, but the other trainers down there cannot. I guess I'm just going to have to start taking home boxes of blanks and labeling them a few at a time. Most are fairly common woods. Some exotics, and some I have emailed the donor and they have been able to help me identify them.
A BIG thanks to George who sent us one of his Australian samplers with all blanks numbered and an index sheet to identify them!
It just occurred to me that I am going to have an old laptop down there running the laser engraver. I can put a link on the desktop to the wood database. That might help.
You're welcome ...!
You are doing great work with that project, they are very lucky to have you...!
My mix pack is now 95 blanks instead of the 82 I believe the pack I sent you was, and in all honesty, I have so many blanks that I wouldn't mind to offer you/to your group, my issue is always the expensive freight from Australia to the USA, I will find out how much a large size box will cost sent via SEA-Mail, from what I recall from other boxes sent overseas that way, it's cost is about 60% less than the air-mail freight, I could aim for a 10kg box the max is 20kg so, I find out the freight cost and make my decision.
I'm also not sure if you would prefer all wood cut into pen blanks or some pieces a little bigger, you tell me what suits the best and I will go from there.
OK, I just got a quote for a 10kg and a 20kg box from here to the USA and the prices are AU$95.00 + AU$12.00 insured and AU$160.00 + AU$21.00 insured.
NOTE:
I was also just considering the possibility to ask IAP members if they would like to help with the shipping expenses to have a large box of pen blanks sent to these vision impaired people, any amount will be most appreciated and would not take long to reach the value required, I believe.
I would like to know if there are any persons/IAP members interested in contribute with a few bucks for this to happen.
I also need to ask Sharon if she is OK with this and Jeff, if this idea of mine is acceptable and legal/within IAP rules, I'm OK with put the box together with lots of goodies...!
I would appreciate if there are any expressions of interest to please share your intentions to participate in this thread and if the whole idea becomes a reality, I will then open a dedicated thread for the "donations" to cover the shipping costs.
Payments would simply be made to me using Paypal at
nyodine@yahoo.com.au
Please do not send any money until the whole thing has been given the OK, thanks...!:biggrin:
Cheers
George
