So who needs to 'ride the bevel' ??? :-D As Cwalker935 said though, he's not got the safest motor mounting has he! I wasn't all that sure about the router holder and how it followed the pattern board either ... :-(

Tony Wells.

When you look at everything closely it's not as bad you'd think. The router is mounted securely in the box, the box is mounted securely in the slot, the router bit is longer than the center of the wood, etc.
About the only thing I would change is the clamp holding down the motor.

Would I do that? No, but this guy does just about everything right to prevent a catch :)

And when you think of it, we are constantly sticking sharp metal objects (that aren't nearly as supported as that router bit) into wood that has more undulations than that hunk of wood (ever mount up an out of round bowl blank that can only spin at 100rpm )....

When the video first started I thought if this guy gets in front of that thing with a gouge or any chisel, he's a moron, but once things started to unfold, it wasn't all that bad....pretty archaic and rough around the edges and obviously a do-it-yourself set up but the concept is interesting.
Why am I hearing a little voice in the back of my head screaming "Don't try it you idiot"?

Getting that to round with a large roughing gouge really isn't that big of a problem. It isn't much different then what we do all the time with pen blanks, it's just larger so you need a bigger roughing gouge. People do the same thing with logs for bowls all the time.

I've done a lot of bowls out of logs but mine are always better balanced than that plus I put them in a chuck big enough to hold a tree, not that puny home made thing he has. Then I gear up in full body armor, a hockey goalie mask, welders gloves and have a dead-man switch with one of those "life alert - I've fallen and can't get up" things hooked to my fat a$$ just in case I get knocked to the ground when it comes flying off the lathe, but I still like the concept of what he's doing....from a distance.
....Derek as my guardian angel? .....oye~
