Yes Another Computer problem

I have been experiencing a problem for about 3 or 4 months now and it seems to be getting worse.

I have a computer desk top. Running windows XP professional 64. I use Firefox. I am on DSL.


Too many times the computer locks up and I get this warning Local Connection 2... A network cable is unplugged.

I have checked all cables and every thing is fine to my knowledge. When this happens I try clicking out of the program I am on and try another and I get server not found. This happens much more frequently on peak times. Have not had this happen before.

So I am looking to the computer gurus to give me some answers and is there a fix?? Thanks in advance.

XP isn't supported any more. You may want to upgrade to Win7 if possible.

Who is your service provider?

Does a particular program give you this error? Which one?

Download and run Malwarebytes if you have not already.

I have an old laptop I use occasionally and I get that message but I am using wireless so the fact that windows says a network cable is unplugged isn't important to me.
You could have a modem problem, a router problem, a computer problem, or a software problem.

I have Verizon as the service provider

I just loaded Malwarebytes and did a scan. They found 151 possible problems. I quarantined and deleted them.

I am aware that XP is not supported any more. Maybe there is where the problem is and no updates are being loaded any more.

No particular program but have the most problems with ebay.

It is not a wireless modem. The modem has to be at least 15 years old. So is the computer.

After running my AVG virus scan and also Malwarebytes scan it is still doing the same thing. I also did a defrag run. Cleaned my disc. Not sure about cleaning out the cookies cashe. Not sure what I may mess up. I can not think of anything else. maybe I should call Verizon and see if i can get a new modem.

151 possible problems is not really saying anything, probably mostly cookies. Even though it isn't a wireless modem or router problem it could still be a modem problem. like I said my laptop is old and running XP, I download a lot of woodworking videos to watch whiles I watch tv and I was having problems with unknown network errors and dropping the downloads shortly after download started and I ended up buying a new router and using a network cable instead of using the wireless. I have since gone back to the wireless just out of convenience. Sorry I can't be of any real help, I know just enough to figure these things out on my own computer. Maybe someone else around here can point you in a positive direction.

If you're hard wired, and losing connectivity, I would first try a different port on the router, then try another Ethernet cable. If that doesn't work, I would try another NIC--they can go bad. Does the computer run OK otherwise? No BSOD? The electrolytic caps in older motherboards can go bad and cause all sorts of odd issues (pull the cover off and look for any caps that the top has puffed up on).

I'm running an eight year old laptop with XP as I type this--no problems.

Intermittent issues can be though to track down. Eliminate one possibility at a time. Good luck!

Although it takes MUCH longer, another reason electrolytic capacitors can fail is because the electrolyte dries up, and they don't always have external signs of damage. Unless your computer is really old, this probably is NOT the cause of your problem. However, tuck it under your hat if all else fails.

Nothing looks bad. The motherboard looks in fine shape. I blew the dust out of it. Early summer I had a new video card installed and the person looked the computer over and did some tests and said everything was fine. It does not do it all the time so that is why the lost cable thing is a mystery. If a cable is dislodged it would do it all the time.

The only computer on the line.
