I've been a Soldier for 24+ years, been deployed to Iraq twice. I took up woodturning in 2008 after I took a class at Fort Campbell woodshop coming back form Iraq. In the military I don't make a lot of money, but my family is well provided for.
I don't post a lot here or Facebook, just don't have the time. Recently, read the post in which a military member attempted to solicit for personal gains. The Army's NCO Creed states " I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety." I have been a member since 2011, I have not solicited for anything and never will. It is a matter of personal pride.
All I ask is that, everyone please be cautious when extending charity and do not let this incident affect your judgment of our military personnel.

Thank you for your service and I agree with you about using rank and status for profit.

I do have to politely disagree with you on wages for most people in the military at 24 years. I retired at 23 years as a SGM. I was Airborne and had Special Duty pay plus BAH, as well as some other pays. But for the sake of simplicity.:
The following are base pays and BAH for senior NCO's at 24 years.

E7: 56,700 + 16,056=72756
E8: 64,284 + 16,848=81132
E9: 75,252 + 18,144=93,936

BAH was for San Antonio.

Thank you for the years you have served. Believe me when I say that what one person does will not cloud my judgement. I seriously believe the person in question has no militaty service record.
The true veterans can just look and "know" the people who have been there.

It is very sad that here in the IAP, people try this crap. There is no great group of people, with bigger hearts, then the members here. That is why it is so dishearting when someone tries to play us for fools.

And maybe after everything that has happened, this could be a wakeup call to all here. Maybe we have to start checking before giving. I personally felt this person couldn't be a Marine........we just have to much pride to behave the way he was.

I judge each person alone. And what they do means more to me then what they are.
 
I am a veteran that was disabled in line of duty. I have absolutely nothing to complain about while a service member but treatment by the VA after discharge is deplorable. Had it not been for my parents help, welfare, and food stamps my family would have been homeless while waiting for the VA to come to a final decision in my disability. Even then it took 9 months to get a 20% rating and a chump change back pay check. I was unable to work and $900 was what I got for 9 months. It took 16 years for me to get my final rating of 70% for my injuries and I got 6 months of back pay for that since that was how long it was since my last appeal denial, yet for the entire time I was living and trying to exist with one functioning lung. My employment options were limited and in a agricultural based small town economy we struggled. I did get to go to school on the VA dime and got more pay for that, then I had to leave my home to find decent employment, but we made it finally becoming independent. Everyone has had their struggles, I know. But I volunteered to serve and was treated poorly (trying not to get censored by Jeff) when I was no longer useful. It is getting better at the VA now I hear, but I have avoided using them for the past run around I have gotten. Maybe when I retire soon I will give them another shot instead of Obama care.

I have a friend who was in Vietnam doing secret operations. He has a 50 year ban on revealing what he did. It will be over next year and he is going to write a book. He just received a letter from VA stating that his disability, burned by Agent Orange, was being revoked and he would no longer have any VA benefits. He is 84 years old. What a crock of s_it!
 
I have never had the privilege of serving in the military and greatly honor those who have. Thank you for your service and please be assured that the recent posts that you referenced do not in anyway represent those who are serving or have served. My
BS meter immediately pegged out upon reading those other posts.

Maybe I am misreading the post, but it sounds like he is trying to help his sister in law with her project. He purchased some items for her but cannot afford others and asked companies for help. I don't read that he is trying to get items for himself.

Finish reading it... She graduated in 2011 and asking for help worked for her then so he thought he would give it a go now for him. Somewhere around page 7 or 8 he came clean.
