Activity in the New England Area?

Hello,

I was looking in the area for activities of the local clubs as some of you have suggested. I wanted to get my sister-in-law involved more, get different aspects of turning from different folks. It seems like this sub-section of the forums is quiet. No announcements here. Makes it hard when there is no activity, and our local woodcraft is 1.5 hours away.
So what is going on New England?

Things are kind of lonely up heah in Maine. Only a couple of folks I know. Distance makes it somewhat difficult for me to travel much south of Portland. Looks like you're about 3.5 hours south of me.

I have noticed that in this area. Everyone is so far away from each other. Makes it hard to do anything. Not to mention for a high school student (sister-in-law) who works, does sports, college prep, regular school work and then her senior project. Just plain out lack of time to travel. The nice thing is the craftsman fair is 5 min down the road but that is once a year for a week. So again quiet here in New England!
 
My sister-in-law and I get the ask your local clubs and pen turners for assistance with her senior project on woodturning. Now we see why i went with an international group. Cause its quiet here in New England.
 
What IS her senior project? Anything we can help with long distance? If an International group can be of help, certainly those of us more local might be.

I am near Boston I have not heard much about IAP things going on around here. I am president of a general turning club, Association of Revolutionary Turners.
Let me know if you get anything going, IAP wise. I am glad to help[ your sister-in-law with whatever I can.

Please, be more specific what your sister-in-law needs for her senior project after all you have done for her.

Better yet, let HER join in on the conversation. All of my nieces are pretty internet conversant and can quite easily express their needs.

Again, what happens to all the donations after the Senior Project?

To bad Rockler doesn't have anything, I was there today and the guys were turning bowls, stopped by on my way home from Freeport

I will tell her to create an account and join the conversation. As for the donations, i know the donations for the project i helped with last year on maple sugaring are still in use. They still make about 20gals of syrup a year.

As for her stuff, if she does not continue to use it, it will sit in my basement. I may find some spare time and use it. But I doubt it.

Yes I read the paper, she could have chosen to do something else. I agree with u on that. But is seems every young adult there seems to go all out. Maple sugaring cost alot but seemed to get them the equipment needed. The hot tub the young man did was insane but all donations. Her friend is building a computer for his senior project, he has 6k in parts in the thing already. So i guess it could be cheap to do a project but it can get expensive as well. Depending on the project.

She wants to head to rockler at some point, getting to be the time of year that i become very busy with snow removal.

It also may be a good teaching moment for her... Why accumulate $2,000.00 + for a Senior High School Project (Very admirable!) and let the equipment, donated from others (and purchased from you/wife), be used for 4 weeks and left to "rust"... Alas, nice equipment should not be allowed to ...rust...


SHE could donate the equipment after she graduates HS to the IAP BASH!!!

She is trying to get me into this turning thing as well. I told her I dont have the time with two jobs and a 2 year old. But I can tell you the more I watch her and help her, the more fun and relaxing it looks. So one never knows it may or may not rust.
Give me more info on the two things above, maybe we will see what happens.

My son also built a high-end gaming computer... Cost about $850.00 with parts from Micro-Center. He did trade in for a model from Alien Ware. That one cost a whopping $2,500. I thought that was insane. 6K??? Is he doing battle with Russia. (My Bad...).

LOL, i about fell over when she told me what he spent. I guess that is everything total. Three monitors, four graphics cards, list goes on and on. She told me he was building it for "folding @ home" to help find a cure for cancer. I would say most of his stuff was donated for that, but i honestly dont know.

Or you could donate the equipment to the Industrial Arts Department at the school. I'm sure the teacher would love the equipment as elective courses across our country have taken a hit due to budget cuts. It would be a tax deduction as well. Well my sister-in-law sent me a text and said she signed up for the site. She said she will not mention her name but she is going to tell the truth about her big brother. I told her not to worry about it and I would take care of the problem.

My sister-in-law graduated high school in 2012. She is currently in college, she is going to further educate herself to become a fish and game officer. She recently came to me with an interest is the woodturning. So we bought her a lathe. She turned a bowl, then another one, then a mug and again another one. She attended a class in vermont for a day. She spends most of her time at the turning tent at the craftsmans fair. She wanted to do more than just turn firewood that i would bring home from work. We bought her some stuff at woodcraft. She needed more. So i took it upon myself to do what i did in 2012 for her senior project in maple sugaring, i had permission from the school to solicit for donations in 2012 for her senior project. Seeing how i am helping her cousin in another school district in the state with his senior project on photography. I figured why not set her up with another senior project and get her some extra stuff for her hobby. So thats what i did. I figured this time I will tell the truth instead of her coming in her to bail her big brother out of the mess he got himself into. Anyway i was just trying to help her out in her hobby of woodturning and went about it the wrong way. She blames that on my mental issues. Maybe thats why my wife and I are going to counseling. Who knows.
I apologize to all of you for causing any harm! I ws just trying to help out my sister-in-law. I understand if you remove me from the community. Please allow her to remain if she did sign up.

I've got to stop in--I didn't even know it was there until we went by it on a trip back to my daughter's from the Maine Mall. Their prices on pen stuff looks a little high, but it's nice to actually look at things. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Freeport (and still have some money left).

Good morning. I am going to remain anonymous if you do not mind. I am the sister in law. I am here to see what kind of trouble my crazy brother has caused this time. He has good intentions, but he goes about things the wrong way. He is a good guy honestly he is. I think he has some mental issues. My sister made him go see a counselor, his mental issues are starting to affect their marriage.
I do apologize for any trouble he may have caused. I told him to just br honest, and people help out if they felt the need to. I see by reading his posts he has been honest in some aspects and in others he embellished the truth or just down right lied. I understand he is just trying to help me out but there is no excuese for the way he went about doing so.
He was honest on his last post. I did graduate in 2012, and I am currently in college for environmental science. He is also helping my cousin with his senior project in photography. My goal is to become a Fish and Game Officer as well. I will have to give him credit for being honest.
I do enjoy woodturning as my brother has stated. My sister is the bread maker in the family. So she is the one who has been buying me all the stuff for my woodturning fetish. I would say my big brother is just trying to make up for alot of things that he lacks in. I honestly think it is a horrible thing that i have to come here and try to fix his misleading ways. I do apologize for his actions and I hope you see as well as others that he was just trying to help his sister.
Big brother I am no longer a child, as you have stated in your posts I am a young adult. You do not need to do everything for me, you do not need to get everything for me.
You do need to understand that you are my big brother no matter what. I told you to be honest up front, people will help me if i am doing a senior project as you stated or as I am stating starting a new adventure in woodturning. Honesty is always the best policy. You know that as you were a Marine, now start acting like one again.
I am sorry for all the havoc my brother has caused. I would like to thank those who have sent stuff to him. I have not been over to his house in a couple of weeks, so I am not sure what he has procured in that time frame. I will use what ever it is that was sent, it may take me some time to do so. I am after all in college, I also play a number of sports at the college. I also work a part time job during my semester's here at college.

Prices aren't bad, just remember your not paying for shipping. I guess they have demo day every Saturday. The guys looked like they were having fun they had about 6 lathes running. I came back with a few dollars, we go up every year. Love it up there.
