Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is?

I picked this up from my part time job. It is what is left from a customer order. But nobody knows what it is. How about ya'll.

My first thought is afzelia zylay . Does it have a distinctive smell ? Afzelia doesn`t . Second thought would be narra , which does have a nice smell . Both thoughts probably wrong .

I have had some figured bubinga that looked a lot like that.

My first thought was bubinga.
Hard to tell from just the 2 pics--need to see it milled smooth and see the end-grain.

To have a good positive ID you need bark and leaf to go alone with the wood grain. Anything else would be just a wild guess as it could be several things.

Could you lick it and let us know what it tastes like? That might help narrow it down.

I second Gary and Tony, looks like it could possibly be bubinga.

I would guess Bubinga as well, check out Hobbit House online and compare things like end grain shots for the best ID ability assuming you didn't receive bark and leaves with it.

My 1st guess would be Narra (Amboyna-No Burl). And if you've turned amboyna, you'll know immediately if it's at least in the same family.

Pretty certain it is figured bubinga. I've turned a number of blanks like that but with a bit more figure in them. They make beautiful pens.
