Hi All,

I am pretty sure that we have all used YouTube for learning, to be entertained or other reasons. Yesterday YouTube announced a new $10/month service called Red that allows for watching YouTube without ads.

Though this may sound like a possibly good idea for those that watch lots of stuff on YouTube, YouTube also did something very devious. YouTube has gone to the content creator that receive ad revenue that they have to sign up for Red and allow YouTube to take a cut from their profits or all of their videos will be removed. Personally, being new to turning I have found Captain Eddy's and Ed's video extremely informative and influential in my learning experience. I would hate to see them go away because YouTube's strong arm tactics.

I know that there are many people on here that produce videos on YouTube, have any of you been confronted by this change in policy?

Also as users, what is everyone's thoughts?

Makes sense - the content providers of these videos that have ads receive a share of ad revenue - Google wants to get a bigger slice of that ad revenue...

So I guess the idea is that if you make money from the ads on youtube, they want you to give some of it back...I don't think this applies to everyone, though, does it?

This sentiment is the reason I have not taken advantage of "advertising" on my YouTubes. Yes, I could receive some monetary benefit, but I would prefer to allow all of you to see my vids WITHOUT YouTube adding advertising.

If I am reading correctly, the "contributors" (me) who have signed up to receive revenue from the advertising added by YouTube, will be the ones effected. So, essentially, they chose to try to monetize their vids and now YouTube wants to allow some people to see those vids without enduring the "add-on-ads"---for a FEE!

What this all seems to boil down to is, to view their content in the same mode you view MY content (free), you will have to pay YouTube.
As I read it, you can still view my content FREE, since I am NOT paid for any of it.

If someone believes I am wrong or has another interpretation of this change, please feel free to post.

I have NOT received any notice from YouTube, so I would guess I am "unaffected" by this change---hopefully, those who watch my vids will also be "unaffected".

If YOU look, there is a ton of recent web traffic about the NEW Red service announced two days ago. So a conversation about it makes sense. I have no idea why you're trying to shoot it down about being a carry over from 2012. And you seriously need to remove the word fail from your vocabulary when posting. Its a complete insult to the OP and the followup posters in the way you use it.

Look on the bright side, I did not call anyone a pizza. Yet ;)

Guess you had to been around the youtube community in 2012 to understand it. Oh well.

Also remind me again why I care what you think.

Once again, as usual, you fail to understand what I said so do everyone a favor and go educate yourself then we will have an intelligent discussion about 2012.

Oh, I understand... But don't care to have any kinda of discussion with you about 2012 - and mainly because given your attitude (shown in your icon) there is no way that it will be an intelligent discussion.

And yes... I know about the paid service stuff for youtube in 2012... and again in 2013... and fan funding in 2014. But none of that means that a discussion about the newest change is a fail. The only fail is your putting people down by calling what they post a fail.
 
As the OP, I was aware of the larger,more popular posters getting funding from the ads and YouTube getting a small cut. However, the point of my posting is that of YouTube now going to remove the user's content if they do not give YouTube a larger share or a share in the those cases where they weren't.

For instance this morning I was watching a bunch of videos on using a skew to turn a pen and CA finishing from various posters including Captain and Ed. I would periodically have to sit through an add before watching the video. I went through 4 or 5 videos then one popped up just before Ed's video. Then I had ads before I few of Captain videos.

I know now that Ed and Captain would not want ads on their videos, but as a general user you cannot tell if the ads was placed there by YouTube (as in these cases) or they are part of the ad revenue sharing.
 
Apparently, there is a change in the way they do things.

I thought they only put ads in front of your video if you were willing to be part of their "revenue sharing" program. If there are ads in front of my vids anyway, what is the advantage to my followers if I am NOT in their "revenue sharing"?
