Primarily, when do you run your workshop air filter?

I have a JDS Air-Tech 750ER mounted to my shop ceiling which I run nearly 24/7. There are really only 2 reasons that I turn it off...

1) I am running other high amperage equipment at the same time such as the table saw & shop vac together.

2) When I apply finish to a pen as I am worried that it would blow dust into the finish.

Other than that I usually leave the JDS running on low and clean it once a month. It is surprising how much garbage it extracts from the air even when I have not been using the shop. In addition to the air filtration it stops a number of other 'still air' issues such as cob-web mold both indoors or out.
 
I don't have one but I know I should. I lost a lung in the Army and should be watching out for the one that is left a little better. Just a priority of where my shop dollars should go since they are strictly limited.
 
I have found a box fan with a furnace filter takes alot out of the air. I clean the filter with a shop vac at the end of the day. Leaving it run (even on low) helps to keep the floating dust down.......so mine is on all the time.

Next two major purchases planned are duct work for the collector and a air cleaner that will hang in the corner. Maybe then I can escape some of the times I am wearing a mask.
 
I don't have an air filter yet .... and my dust collector is a re-purposed vacuum cleaner that I should be running more often. (Didn't think I'ld have that bad a reaction to the cocobolo!)

I'll be taking an old box fan and affixing a cheap filter pad to it. I'll be looking for a filter pad that I can clean using water, and probably pick up a pair so I can swap it at will an let the other one dry. It will at least pick up the worst of the airborne dust and keep it cleaner in my living room.

I will probably just leave it running 24/7, as it's in the house, but when I get my shop made .... I'll probably have it running any time I'm working in the shop. I'll leave it on for at least an hour or so after I'm done in the shop. I'll probably wire it to my dust collection system and put a switch in by the light switch, so I can turn it on and off when I need it. The shop will be connected to the house and will also be my laundry room. :P
 
I vote I do not use cause most if do all turning is a will be done outside
Now just a way to get those shaving off of me I be great ....lol

There isn't any bigger priority than safety and your health. When you take your situation into consideration this should have been one of your first purchases. Please get one.
 
Ok, just got back from ACE Hardware ... I went looking for 100% pure caustic lye (powdered bleach), but they don't carry any... so while I was there I noticed that they have 20 x 20 x 1 plastic mesh air filters for only $1.29 apiece ... I grabbed 4.

I reasoned that I can always double up a pair if I think it"s not catching enough, and they're cheap. My one issue with these is that they have a CARDBOARD frame, but that's easy enough for me to fix, I have a lot of spare plastic laying about.
 
Thanks for the votes and replies. I had bought a Jet ($300 model), but when I went to teh store it looked huge given the size of my shop. I am going to wait for a sale and get it - better too big than too small I guess.

Tony before I got my overhead air cleaner which to me is a must if you are serious about your health and do spend time in a shop making dust, I used this. It was all the rage when they first came out for scrollers. We could put it right behind the scroll saw and collect dust. The worst part about scroll sawing is there is no way unless you fabricate something to keep the dust from blowing all over you. You aim the air hose away from you but it still in the air and you are breathing it in unless you wear a dust mask. This maybe an option for you and others.

That is what I have. I bought it from Rockler. It stopped working after 3 months. And remember, I just turn pens and have 2 dedicated dust collectors (3/2 to 1.5 HP) and a Rigid Shop Vac. I don't know what happened to it. I didn't throw it out yet, I barely used it.

Thanks though..I probably just got a lemon.

It takes quite awhile to scrub a room clean from airborne dust. May want to look into having the cleaner stay on for at least another hour after you leave the room. Help keep the airborne dust from settling on things to be later disturbed when you again enter the room. Can put it on a timer.
 
I monitor the air in the room with a Dylos DC1100 air monitor.
After doing sanding, or using the table saw, miter saw the numbers shoot into the 6-7k range. I have a JDS cleaner running anytime in the room working. It will usually clear the air in 10 - 15 mins aprox. where the numbers get below 100. When doing pen work I notice the numbers go to the 2 -3k range.
Room size aprox 12 x 24

For the Standard DC1100 1.0 micron model;
1000 + Very Poor
350 - 1000 Poor
100 - 350 Fair
50 - 100 Good
25 - 50 Very Good
0 - 25 Excellent Air Quality

Tony - I bought a Grizzly one at their tent sale for $75. It seems almost identical to the Rikon model Woodcraft sells for $200. They had it on sale a few months ago for about $150. My shop is small 18 x 10 with low ceiling. The unit is smaller than the Jet $300 unit but it works great in my smaller shop. It has great filters and a timer to leave it on after you leave. Take a look at it for the small shop.
 
I turn mine on when I go into the shop and usually turn it off an hour or so after I am finished for the day. Shops in the basement so no problem turning it off but sometimes I forget and it runs all night.
