Wow. Don't let anyone tell you that upgrading to windows 10 is painless. First my monitor went blank, I had an older monitor and had to get a new one because I couldn't hook up an HD cable to the monitor I had so I could get an image (that's what Dell called it) to be able to download windows 10 monitor drivers. Now I had problems with my IPOD. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and I just bought a couple and they downloaded to my ITUNES ok but when I tried to sink up my IPOD it said it couldn't connect with the device I plugged in because there were errors and it erased my IPOD. I finally got it to recognize my IPOD and then ITUNES said there were errors and couldn't sync with my IPOD and gave me a message that said there were 304 warnings. Don't ask me how, but I kept messing around and I finally got it to sync and reload everything back onto my IPOD. Hope no one else has problems.

Again, things like this is why I always tell everybody to DO NOT JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON RIGHT AWAY. New operating system releases ALWAYS have bugs that need working out ... wait at least a few months before getting it. I generally wait at least a year before getting an operating system...

That is, of course, before I signed up to beta test Windows 7. I got it for free for my gaming system and my laptop (64 bit and 32 bit systems), but as a tech-head (or geek, as we were once known), I knew what I was doing.

Speaking of which ... I've been beta testing Windows 7 now for 6 years, which means I've still never bought and paid for it. I call Microsoft every now and then with a bug report and laugh while they tell me that I should upgrade to the full version of the software in order to fix my issue .... My issue is that I can continue using the beta software LONG AFTER IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE EXPIRED AND UNUSABLE with a simple trick. I didn't bother beta testing Windows 8, but I know it also had the exact same glitch. I also know for a fact that Windows 10 would have had it too, but they decided to just give it to us for free. :)

I'm not much of a tech-head(geek), but I'm not so sure Microsoft has done us much favors in all their up grades... I'm still using a 10 year old Dell with XP that I think is much more user friendly than either Windows 7 (my wife has that and I'm not as able to move around in it and fix what she messes up) or 8 or 10.. my step-son bought a new lap top with Windows 8 and left it on the computer about 2 weeks before he down graded to 7... he couldn't play his games on 8... he's even less of a tech-head than I am.... my son is a computer professional.. he owns his own computer software company and does some pretty high tech stuff (it's all Greek to me though)... he is strictly a Mac person and even half the time operates in Unix... he only uses the Windows for his games.
My company in Houston from about 10 years back had mirrored mainframes that ran our company system... it was a ll Unix... only persons who used Windows was me and the boss... and we both had an interface that linked our systems to the Unix boxes. I used Windows because I worked with customs and department of commerce and their system was all in Windows... the boss did most of the sales, so since customers were in Windows, he used it for sales.

I upgraded my wifes laptop and my Surface to Windows 10 and my experience was positive. No problems at all. And this is coming from someone that hates Microsoft. The only reason why I have it on my surface is because I have a few things that only run under Windows.

My other computers (4) all run Linux Mint.

I'm afraid trouble may come looking for you. Windows has quit all support for XP, so they're not writing patches to fix security leaks anymore, which means if someone out there wants into all the XP systems bad enough, you're had.

Wow. I have upgraded all my machines with no problem so far. And I really like it so far.
Lin.

Don't get me wrong, I like it so far. I enjoy upgrades, it gets boring using the same old operating system all the time. MY favorite was windows 95, a friend and I went to computer city at night and was in line for the midnight launch of Win 95, I was interviewed by a TV station. I think it was a foreign station though. There were people there from all over. It was and is Microsofts backyard up there, so the media was everywhere.

All I ask is that it not be slow, easily infected (I can't afford a Mac), and be relatively easy to operate. My biggest gripe is Excel, I had it all memorized and then they went to a thread based toolbar. I've just muddled through it since then.

I upgraded to 10 no problem my wife 7 box started acting the 24" monitor was going south so I traded my 21 Dell monitor for her 24" monitor. Her7 box work fine my 10 box doesn't took the 24" and some other stuff to Erecycler and kept a 15" monitor it works fine on 10 box. Luckily I have an iMac which I just upgraded to El Capitan with no problems. Keeping the 10 box until I get all the old pictures onto DVD's and then it will be given to my wife as mine is newer. Idealy I would to get 27" iMac and give this one to my wife she won't hear of it, does't like change, so thing will stay the same even though she has an iPhone and iPad that would sync with the iMac like mine do.

You may be right and that is why I keep all my important data backed up on a separate hard drive... just not so sure my 10+ year old Dell can handle win 10... I do have a copy of Win 7 that I could mount, but after working with wife's 7, not sure I would like it....

Excell is okay, I used it a lot at my last job, but prior to that I used Lotus123 and actually liked it better than Excell.... I think it had features they never put into Excell... I actually wrote a 50+ page tariff in Lotus and could upgrade multiple pages from one master page... never learned to do that with excell.... I use an excell clone now in Open Office... it works okay.
