The Summer Extravaganza Wood ID contest that you have all been waiting for with bated breath is now underway.

The complete rules for this contest are posted here, but just are a few reminders:
1. Your IAP profile MUST include your full name
2. Only one entry per person
3. You must post your entries in this thread
4. You may not edit your entry once it has been posted
5. You earn one point for each correct answer - highest point total wins.
6. Ties will be broken by the earliest entry.

The contest will run through Aug 24, so you have plenty of time.

Your post must list the numbers 1-10 which will correspond to the number on the left side each of the blanks in these photos. Type the common name of that blank next to the number in your entry.



You can use this species list to help identify the blanks. Note that there are 25 names in this list, but there are only 10 blanks. It's your challenge to determine which 10 of these species are represented by the blanks in the photos and correctly identify each of them. I have included the scientific name of each species to assist you in your research, but your entry only needs to show the common name.

Ahem.....

You are absolutely correct about that, Gregory. Notice that I never said that the 25 names on the species list were wood. :smile:

I just threw the Prickly Pear in for a little humor. That plus the fact that I have a whole pasture full of the stuff. It's a real nuisance except for the short time each year when they are in bloom. If the weather conditions are favorable and the whole pasture is covered in beautiful yellow cactus flowers, it is truly a wonderful sight to behold. No wonder that they are called the Yellow Rose of Texas (although the cactus flower is NOT the inspiration for our state song by that same name).

Meh ... I'll have to see about sending you some prickly pear wine sometime, but you'll have to remind me about it. I have a very thirsty uncle and a lot of hispanic co-workers... :)

How can one guy be both the source for these anxiety ridden contests as well as the welcoming committee for new members. Seems a bit ironic, no?
I'm not smart enough for one and been around too long for the other. Edgar, you are the epitome of a wolf in sheep's clothing!

When you show up here Edgar is smiling and nice and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, then Bash and Summer Extravaganza rolls around and suddenly the warm and fuzzy is replaced with tears and anxiety. Jeff, I think were going to need to add a shrink to the IAP staff!

Well I won't argue that I'm anywhere near perfect in the grammar and spelling department. In fact I'm so bad I don't even know which word or words I misspelled. Which one or ones are misspelled?

I think people forget that the P is silent in PSHrink, the exact same way it is in PSYchologist.......

Nope - the photos were taken in shaded sunlight.

I touched them up a little bit with Photoshop to bring out a little detail and to try to get fairly accurate color matching with the actual blanks.

I just used my iPhone to shoot the blanks in groups of 5. I didn't want to shoot each one individually with my good camera because I was afraid that that might make the identification task too easy. :devil::devil:

1: Uhm. Andiroba? Or maybe bloodwood. I'm going with andiroba.
2: Mesquite! Right?
3: Hickory, or something that looks like hickory.
4: Looks red. Redheart?
5: Google tells me this looks like swiss pear.
6: P-p-pecan?
7: Magnolia. Confidence gets a half point, right?
8: Mopane? Looks dry and crack-y.
9: Texas ebony, or some olive wood that I burned on my table saw.
10: Do you know what I get when I Google "wood apple?" Copyright infringement. Still, I think I see a tiny logo on this one.
