Thinking and Planning Need a number please

A couple of months ago, I put up a post about holding a pen turner's gathering in Central Florida. I think I am going to go through with it but actually have it near the Florida/Georgia line.

I am going to try to find some venues to hold the two day get-together and need an estimate as to how many people would possibly attend.

If you would attend this event, in February of next year, please post your name here.

Also, if I find a venue, would any of the attendees be willing to pay a 'registration fee' to cover the cost of the 2-day venue? I'm not talking a lot of money, maximum at about $25 per person.

I was also thinking maybe November/December but due to the holidays, I think it would be better in February after we all take a breather.

This would also allow me to get vendors in and donations for raffles/door prizes, and speakers, etc.

I am also forming a planning committee for this, so if you are interested in helping me, please message me.

If it's in Jacksonville, I would seriously consider attending. After 5 hours in the car; the trip is no fun for me.

I would be happy to help you Michelle with the administration and/or finance tracking if you like.

I actually explored having one in the north Atlanta. The host had many more question (all good ones) that I didn't feel like tracking down the answer to. I am not for organizing things.
 
I am good with it for sure. Fee is fine. Florida is nice, Georga is good if not to far noth. One year I drove to Virginia.

A display of what people use to drill blanks, sand, etc. would be nice or that type of thing.
 
Thank you for all the input! I'm actually real excited to start planning! I am also open to any and all ideas and what you might think would be good for guest speakers/vendors :)

There is a Florida woodturning symposium at Lake Yale Baptist conference center Feb 4-7. I was planning on attending this...depending on how close to this you were thinking would depend on if I would go. Definitely interested though.

Yes, I am going into this blind, but I love a challenge! I guess it's the Aries in me LOL
So far, I have contacted the Jacksonville Woodcraft to see if they would be open to holding the gathering at their location.

If so, I will choose a date in February and then solicit vendors, speakers, and other turners.

I am open to any and all ideas from anyone on this forum. Again, this is my first time and I am certain I will make a few mistakes, but I am willing to learn from them for the gathering in 2017!

My focus right now is to find a venue and set a date.

Hi Michelle. I will send you a PM with a list of questions and things to consider when I approached a local WW shop. You may not need it given your talent and love of organizing (which I don't have :-) ).
 
I need some feedback on possible demonstrators. One hour (maybe more) increments with a 30 min break in between speakers. I am planning on a welcome/ice breaker get together on Friday evening. Then Saturday from 10-6 for Day 1 and Sunday 10-4 Day 2.

No sure about the space constraints due to unknown venue at this time, but depending on attendance, the demonstrations might be on a sign up basis only with a seat limit.

Anyone?

I live in Sarasota, I will be attending the symposium Feb 4-7 in Lake Yale. What I meant was, depending on your schedule and how close it is to these dates would depend on if I would attend. Sorry I should have been a little more clear on that.

Keep in mind Michelle that the IAP Birthday Bash is in February and many of the Vendors who might otherwise contribute may have to hold back because of their contributions to IAP contests and drawings.

IWCS (International Wood Collectors Society) has their Winter Woodfest Feb 10-13, Also at Lake Yale.
I am also interested.
 
I would be knee deep in the Bash in Feb. Especially at the end of the month. March would work better for me. I would still try and make it work.
 
That is a lot closer that the other shows i would really try on this one the other ones was just to far for me. Smitty already said about birthday bash i think there is a big show in April and May to so March would be good.
 
So I'm shooting (pardon the pun) for Feb 26th (just for intros) Feb 27 (first day) and 28th (last day) I spoke with Woodcraft and am waiting on an answer. I'll keep you all posted!

Michelle, just a thought - maybe contact with the organizers of MAPG and MPG would be worthwhile to see where they "walked" in this same process. Their suggestion, experiences, and pitfalls will save you some planning time.
Some good thoughts have been expressed in this thread.
I've never been involved but I bet it is worth all the effort to bring something like you are talking about into reality.
It is a little too far from TX for me to attend, but I hope you will be able to bring it about.
