I'm new to pen making and new to this site, but I had an idea that would benefit myself along with any participants.
Since my budget for pens is a bit tight, I thought I would be able to try various types of pens while giving back.
I would like to check the interest in a swap of sorts. Someone sends me two pen kits in any style they desire, and I would supply the blank and make one of the pens. I would then send the pen back to the person that sent the kits to me. This way the sender gets a pen and I get to make one for myself, all while getting to try different pens.

This sounded like a good idea in my head, but maybe it isn't.
Let me know your thought on it.

Ok, maybe I'm missing something.....but why would someone here( that turns pens already) go for this?

I'll tell you what... you send me two Emperors and I'll send one back completed.

Good luck!!

Like I said, it sounded like a good idea in my noggin.
This was just a thought.

You have a point, but the sender would have a pen they could keep or sell as they would normally do, without the work involved.
The pen would use a blank that I would cast (I kind of like casting and have more resin than I would use for myself), or if specified, I could use wood.

I wouldn't expect an extravagant kit like the Emperor, just the more common kits people use.

So why don't you just sell a finished pen for the cost of two kits? That way, you get to keep both..........which you can sell for the cost of four kits etc etc:wink:

If your blanks are really cool, then why not swap those for kits?
1 nice blank for a slim, two for a Sierra, three for a Jr etc....

This is actually a very good deal given skiprat's pens!

LOL thanks Kelly, I may be able to polish up an old bolt, but there are thousands of members here that can finish up an Emperor better than me.....

I agree Kelly! Skip I've got two Emperor's from the group buy just sitting there.

Dan,
The idea of selling some of your blanks is a good one that he passed along. Or trading blanks for kits etc. I mean this to be helpful so I hope it comes across that way but having your full name and location in your profile is a big trust builder here too, makes everyone feel like they know you more.

It by no means is a bad offer you are making. You may want to post pics of some of your blanks too, may have some takers.

That would be great, if I had an outlet to sell pens. I never intended to sell pens and would like to make them for myself, wife, family, etc. This is just a small hobby for me and resources are limited.

I wouldn't say that my blanks are really cool. I'm sure with all of the casters, there are better and cooler blanks and it seems like if people wanted to trade blanks for kits, it would have been done already.

You help me see the fault in my thought.

After viewing some of your pens...
you send two of them to me and I will improve  one of them and return it to you.

I agree with Skiprat. Post some pics of your blanks in the swap area with your offer. Or run an ad to sell your blanks, then buy the kits you want.

BTW, I have a bolt pen made by Lorbay that he made for me for the December PITH. He used the tutorial from Skiprat. Even if it wasn't a PITH pen, I wouldn't trade it for an emperor kit. It is so cool to see the expression on peoples faces when I show them what it really is.

I appreciate the input, but I just don't have the potential of being a salesman.
I would guess that the market is flooded with blanks and what would make mine any more attractive than those already available? It seems there are plenty of options. Then there is the reputation I lack, that those already selling, have established.

You can post in the trades area for free. You have nothing to lose.

Hi H20 send me your address and I will send you a few kits for you to play with, no need to send anything back. I have been in your situation before, all I ask is just pay it forward sometime when things improve.

Michael, I appreciate your offer, but I wouldn't take advantage of others. That was my reasoning in my idea... both sides get something from the deal. Although now, I understand that pen makers probably don't want a pen.

Dan if you change your mind the offer stands. I don't see it as takin advantage at all. I am getting something though, satisfaction on giving someone a hand.

As requested, Here are the only two blanks I have readily available.
The sun makes them look much different than in the kitchen. They have a lot of sparkle and the color is different in the sun.

Those are very nice looking, don't sell yourself short, you can find a market for those. PM me your address, it will be next week before I'm able to send anything out but I'd be more than happy to do a swap with you.

Hi Dan!

Actually, I,d love to take you up on your offer! Why don't you PM me your address, and let me know what types of kits you like to use, and I'll see what I can put together. I really enjoy getting pens from other penturners!

Scott.
