Does any one use Windows 8?

I was asking because I bought a new tablet and it is a Toshiba Encore 2 tablet 10" screen. I got it this a.m. and I spent the most part of the day trying to get to know it. At first it was frustrating because I could not get into my email and I figured out how to get that. Downloaded a couple of games and can't find them in the tablet. Grrrr..... Well I was planning to take it with me when I go back to my shop so I will take my kindle along too so I can play some games and such. This is a nice little tablet, but Windows 8 sucks! It's not easy ot learn how to use but there is a video demonstration on how to use it but it goes too fast for me and the sound is not loud enough for a person who is deaf. I wish these computer companies would understand that there are folks out there who can't hear well at all and need to be able to boost the sound more. I have the same trouble when watching you tube videos. Fay

WINDOWS 8 IS CACA!!!!!! My mom got her Windows 7 laptop all screwed up real good, to the point where nothing worked, so instead of getting it fixed, she went and got a new one. With windows 8.

I started setting it up for her, and could only get half way through and couldn't go any farther. No instructions, manuals, help dialogs, nothing. Couldn't get the computer to do anything.

I suggested she call the high school kid across the street to see if he could do anything. He got the new computer all set up in a flash and showed her how to use it, then got her old Windows 7 laptop all straightened out and running like new. Now her new Windows 8 laptop sits and collects dust, and she's happy as can be on her Windows 7 laptop.

You should see if you can return your Windows 8 machine and see if they still have something with Windows 7 on it.

Most of my machines have moved on to Windows 8 now and I'm fine with it after learning the little differences and how to find the things I was used to.

Give it a day or two and it'll fall into place.
 
My laptop has Windows 7 but my tablet has Windows 8. I have been playing around with it and I can get the desk top on it which looks like Windows 7 but it runs a little different. I'll get used to it I'm sure. I was just laying here playing a few games of Mahjongg on it as I was so mad because my pine cone blank didn't turn out. But what the hey. I don't think I mixed it long enough so it was a mess but maybe it will still be turnable. I don't know yet. Going to pour another one tonight and d-mold it tomorrow to see how it will turn out. Will mix it longer and make sure it is mixed right. Today it seems like nothing is working out right. Darn! Well going to see about pouring another blank... Good night Fay
 
I have windows 8.1...it has a desktop icon that make the GUI look like Windows 7. I am now used to it (took about 2 weeks) and it's ok.
 
I just bought a windows 8 computer and HATE it. I HATE 7 also and would really like to have a new one with VISTA. Thinking of taking it back. Don't get me started on Office 365!

I solved my Windows problem 2 years ago. bought an iMac and have not had a single problem since. It is also cross compatable with my iPhone and iPad. I still have my old Dell with Win 7 but haven't turned it on in a year. I have some stuff I want to get off of it. Someday I will sit down and burn some DVD of the files.

My wife would not make the switch so I have go and try to remember how to straightened it out every 6 months or so. The iMac doesn't get malware, or virus's and doesn't crash.
 
Thanks for the replies every one. I will get used to it I'm sure. Maybe I should have gotten an iMac. I played around with it last night and still have some things to figure out but it's a hurdle to get over.... It'll be great for travel any ways and it is larger than my kindle. I can see the screen better tho I have to enlarge it once in a while. Thanks again... Fay

DO take it back. Not since XP has M$ produced a decent OS. One of the reasons I switched to OSX on a Mac.
 
XP was nice but there are so may problems associated with security and faster hardware that is grotesquely out dated.

Vista is Windows ME revisited cause it was just as terrible.

Windows 7 is solid.

Windows 8 is terrible

Windows 8.1 in desktop mode is just like Windows 7 but with greater performance.

Office 365, when configured correctly and understanding its limitations, is a fantastic product.

One product that works very nicely as an add-on is the Start8 costs $5 and it brings the Windows 7 like experiecne back to Windows 8 and 8.1 if you do not like the "tiled" desktop. The Windows 8 Start menu returns with Start8!

Win 8 has done more to kill computer sales than any OS ever! There are some things you can do to make it more like Win 7 ... updating it to 8.1 is supposed to help and there are add on shell programs that will bring back the start button. My solution was to buy a refurbished Win 7 machine. :smile:
I have heard, not sure if it is true, that when they come out with Win 10 it will be a free upgrade for a limited time. We shall see.
 
I am using the technical preview of Windows 10 on a 10 year old PC and actually like it. Takes a little to get used to doing things but otherwise it works nice
 
Microsoft will soon have Windows 10 out. It will be a free upgrade to all Windows 8 users and my computer salesman friend says it is much easier to navigate than 8. He was a beta tester.
 
I actually like Windows 8. Yes, it took a little figuring out at first but it really isn't that bad once you get used to it. I can see people not liking an operating system, but I don't get the widespread hate for it.
 
From XP to Win 7 was not a big deal for me. Win 8 was a disaster when the company changed several of us over with new laptops. Productivity dropped like the proverbial lead balloon. Training on the use of it was terrible at the best. I learned better than others, but I was still not productive like I expect of myself.

It is not a matter of hate but more of a matter of frustration. MS dropped the ball big time on the release. One thing that worries me is all the beta testers saying 10 is so much better. They are the same ones that liked 8. If I have to learn a new OS than I am looking to head to Unbutu. My home pc has Win 7 on it and it is fine. I really have no need for 8 or 10 at this point. Still in 7 there are a lot of security holes. Amazing that MS cannot make an OS free of those like Apple has always done.

One thing 8 and 8.1 do is track your location as soon as you boot up. Why does MS need that information? BTW, 10 will be a free upgrade for 7, 8 and 8.1 users for one year after release.
 
The Windows 8 is starting to come together for me. I found it easier to locate a game or two on it and so far so good. I can get into my email and my isp with no problems now. I have not figured out how to post any pictures to the forums as yet. I only have one picture I was going to test that with but may not get to it until tomorrow.... Thanks every one. Fay
 
Anyone can download and install windows 10 as a beta tester. I hate windows 8 because they made everything disappear, I was working on a friends computer and had to always use the search function just to find control panel:frown:, until I find that it is buried in the disappearing menu on the right. Windows 10 however brings back the start menu somewhat, and is more of a gradual change from windows 7 so us guys that finally got onto windows 7 can understand it! Also windows 10 has greatly improved automatically finding and installing all the drivers you need to make your computer work (saves hours in set up times).

If you are stuck with windows 8 and want your old start menu, check out classic shell. (not affiliated in any way, just a happy user) It is free and very powerful.
 
I LOVE Windows 8. I've made a good living for the last year taking it off new computers and putting Windows 7 on!

I've been a computer consultant for more than 30 years. When Windows ME came out, I thought they could not possibly produce a worse operating system. Then they came out with Vista. OK, I was wrong. Vista was worse than ME. But surely they couldn't come up with something WORSE than Vista, could they?

OH YES. Even Microsoft admits Win8 is awful. They started to "fix" it with a Win9, but the users said it was still awful. So they scrapped the idea for Win9 completely and went to Win10. It is supposed to go back to the "look and feel" of Win 7, but be able to toggle to the Metro interface if you want it. We'll see. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ME.
 
How about DOS 2:11 or Win95 the 98. I drug my old Tandy 1000 out last summer and set it up with the DOT matrix printer and 12" color monitor and DOS 640k memory and 2 floppy drives amazed my Grandkids on what Grandpa could do. I love my Mac. 2 years and not one virus, Malware or a crash. Thinking of getting another an set up my wife just so I don't have deal with here Window Box any more.
 
I still have my old desk top computer sitting here and it is still hooked up, but it doesn't work any more. It had crashed at one time and I got a new hard drive put in and that one lasted about 6 months. So there it sits. I would like to get rid of the thing but I need to get the old hard drive out first and then I'll get rid of it. Too bad because the parts are still good. Fay

Win 98 2nd edition was solid. XP was solid. Win7 is pretty solid now, but had some problems early on.

DOS was based on CPM which was the first operation system I was really fluent in. (Did some work on 6502 systems, but CPM was the first REAL home computer operating system that you could do business applications on.) DOS with GEM was the first real Graphical User Interface I used. I worked with TeX (which had the MOST entertaining error messages! Once an error box popped up that said "This can't happen!" Ah, the "good old days" of acoustical modems at 300 baud that you stuck the telephone handset in, floppy disk drives, tape drives, and WAY back, punch cards!
 
Dual full height floppy drives and no hard drive, Dr. DOS. You could lean back and read a text file you were downloading on that old 300 baud modem while you received it too. I haven't heard the name GEM in years. 3 1/2 inch drives were such an improvement on arrival. DOS was fun to work with when you cold turn somones screen upside down on them. The hard part was not laughing so they new who did it. Or have letters drop to the bottom of the screen. I miss DOS from time to time.
 
I could have gotten a 20mb hard drive for $800 but would have had to change the BIOS on the mother board. 640K memory was max. you had to park the hard drive when you were done. I was hot had 1200 baud modem that I had to program to work. Basic C Pascal. COBOL. First job I had with the CHP was in Data Process working the Punch Cards, sorting, collating and one other thing with those boards you had to wire to tell them what to do then on to the computer room and the IBM 360 with all the Disk and Tape drive and Printers. And now I don't think I could do any of it. Then you had the impatient blinking courser wait for you to do some thing. AOL, Prodigy and one other besides all bulletin boards. It was fun and a challenge but much better now. I remember when my instructor at college started talking about pointing devices like the mouse and track ball, wow. Remember the hassles if you had an IBM Clone like a Tandy and getting the software to work properly. All these memories are coming back from years ago.
 
We took a 1 hour course at Staples when we bout the new laptops with Windows 8. Once we got past the new methods of getting from point A to point B Windows 8 we were okay with it. Neither my wife or I are really computer literate, but in our old age we have mastered it.

It is all about change, we fight change and complain about it.
