I have finally gotten the bearings out of my lathe - the manual and diagram indicated a 6006zz bearing, but the bearing is stamped with 6007.

That being said, they also had rubber sealed bearings in other places where it said zz double shield is to be expected - so perhaps they just used what bearings they had on hand...

But, my question is - do I replace with the spec, or like-for-like? Should I put in a 6006zz or 6007zz? Does it matter?

Maxwell,
I think I would go with spec... they may well be compatible but I tend to follow the manufacturer's specs to be sure.... that said, I'll start this weekend to tear my lathe down also... I have a JET1442 with the Reeves unit... it's about 8 years old and so far I've replaced just about everything that moves inside the headstock... one or more of my bearings froze this afternoon... kind of a shock, I was sanding a bowl when it just stopped, the motor kept on turning and the belt kept going around, but nothing was moving. Then to make things really exciting, when I looked up Jet's bears from the parts list, Jet's website didn't work, eReplacement's site said two of the three bearings are obsolete and discontinued, so I have to wait til Monday to call Jet and see what's up.
I usually buy my bearings from VBX, their prices are about half what Jet and eReplacement wants and are comparable to what Jet uses... if not the very bearing they use... I've saved the original bearings and they look just like what I got from VBX... they sell Nachi Japanese bearings.... but when I went to check out, Mozilla popped up a window that said to the effect, this is a bad site, we don't recognize this site and it may be compromised or hacked... so I chose to skip the check out and will just call Monday, or I may drop by Fastenal and see if they carry the right bearings.

Measure the bearing that came out --- confirm the size is as labeled. Unless you want to get into machining, need to replace with a bearing of the same size. Shielding and seal choices are optional. Diameters are set.

I am going to be very interested in how you make out on Monday. I have the same lathe but it's only 2 years old. Hearing that some of the parts are obsolete as you say makes me a little nervous.
Thanks
Bob

The bearing is 62mm wide, and has a 35mm inner hole - so it looks like it's a 6007zz...

Thanks for the help!

(Now I just need to find an SKF dealer in my area!)

Andrew
Don't have to be SKF they are all cross referenced with each others.
Motion Canada or Kaman Bearing

Going to call JET tomorrow morning... have gotten pretty friendly with the tech guys over the last few years... I have for all practical purposes rebuilt the inside of my lathe over the last couple of years. It's been a work horse and I've made over 2050 pieces on it (since I started counting) and not just pens... some pretty hefty bowls and such from some pretty funky chunks of wood...not always round to start, so I've pretty much beaten it down... it's been a really good lathe and I like it.

I use VXB bearings for most of my bearing needs, unless they don't carry the one I need. Their 6007ZZ is $10.37, don't know how that compares to others. No affiliation, found them several years ago and am happy with their bearings.

You beat me to it, but I get my bearings from VXB also... they appear to be mostly the Nachi brand out of Japan and look identical to the originals that were in my lathe...for half the price.

But yesterday, Mozilla came up with a warning message when I tried to go into their check out... I canceled the cart and will make a phone call tomorrow.

go to the autoparts store ie napa, they have a spec book on bearings and shield types
found a lot of bearings for customers in my 20 yrs as a counter person
