BUT you CAN trust that you will get NO MAIL!!!

I guess we should be thankful, when I was a youngster there was no mail delivery on the 12th (Lincoln's birthday) or the 22nd (Washington's birthday) and we got a full day off of school on the 22nd with a half day off on the 12th.

The message there was Lincoln worked twice as hard as Washington, only took off half as much time??:usflag:

I would like to point out that we gained another "holiday", but that could get into all sorts of political and other overtones, so I won't go there.

Which is exactly why I didn't mention it either. I just know Washington's birthday was well appreciated because it was the only full day off school between New Years Day and Good Friday (which was a school holiday then) We had 6 week marking periods when I was in school and the 1st one of the 2nd half of the year was usually from January 2 to the middle of February and was normally without holidays. We also didn't get "snow" days. In my 8 years of elementary school we had maybe 2 or 3 times we were sent home at 1pm and none where school was canceled and in high school we had one day when our bus could not get through...but, school (which was about 2/3 walkers) was open and those of us who didn't get there were given a "legal" excuse but counted as absent...

In todays world........You can't let your kids walk to school.
I also remember as a kid getting many more and heavier snow storms. I remember one blizzard......we were off from school weds-tues. The first three days we had steady snow with winds. Still had to feed and water the farm animals. Saturday- Monday night.......we cleaned out the roads, driveways, yards, and barn areas. Tuesday, we finally got to the point we could clean out the sheds where the animals were at. They were fine.....had bedding, made nests, we laughed at their systems. But we wheel barrowed out all the snow so the tractor with scoops could move it down the line.

AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.......the good old days.

Now with No Mail on Monday........I will be looking for something to be here on Tuesday.

Off the top of my head I'd say you don't live in Buffalo NY or Boston MA.... But my two navy buddies One from White Bear Lake and one from Harris used to tell me you had 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor sleigh riding.

Hmmm.....

Well guys this is the truth...I was born at home in a house with no indoor plumbing, no electricity and no central heat. We moved when I was about 3 years old so I don't remember that. The first house I remember had all three. Also when I was in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades I did walk 2 miles to school every day. There was no bus and we had no car. Everybody walked (I walked the farthest) except occasionally when it was raining a couple of people would bring their kid in a car. We moved again and the next 5 years I only had to walk 3/4 of a mile. I was lucky in high school there was a bus and I only walked 1/4 mile to the bus stop....But, I played baseball and basketball and I had to find my way home from practice and games and that was 5 miles on a very lightly traveled road and I walked that quite often, if I was lucky and the timing was right I would get a ride. (Small town and virtually everybody who traveled that road knew me)

The walking was uphill in only one direction but when you are 5 - 8 years old and small for your age two miles is a lot of steps whether it's up or down hill. I had to leave home at 7:30am to be at school by 9:00am and while school got out at 3pm I seldom got home much before 4:45. Also, there was an 8th grader who thought it was great fun to pick me up and throw me into snow banks on the way home....

One of my brothers Senior year in high school he walked 5 miles to catch the school bus. Another brother, had to go the same high school but only had to walk a mile because the bus driver started coming to our town so more of our kids would go to that high school.

I live close to Buffalo NY in a snow belt that's even heavier.

I think that whole area is pretty much in a snow belt isn't it? I used to live on the Southern Tier between Binghamton and Elmira and was always amazed at how much more snow they got 40 miles north of us - and what they got were "dustings" compared to the Buffalo area.

I am sooooooo glad that there are millions of people who live in the Northeast and find things to do with the ice and snow! While we used to live in swamplands, they are drying up as the snowbirds and retirees move down and require any available water for drinking, pooping, washing, wasting water on their lawns, etc. But, don't worry, the pols with figure out how to build residences on more of the "Sinkhole Central Florida" land that you won't know anything about! So go ahead and retire to spend your "golden years" in Gov. "Snakehead" Scott's land of purchased elections!!!

As far back as 1970 when my in-laws retired to FL it was obvious that the influx of people going there would eventually cost FL most of the things that made it so attractive when I was stationed there in the late 1950s.
