As promised, the date for the next meeting was discussed some, before we ate, and I think it was the way it should be done.

Pending a natural disaster.....the next meeting will be held:

March 14th 2015

The place is still up in the air, but the date is set and works for those that were at the meeting. Being this is three months(and a few days) away, should still be some room on those calendars....

BTW, I thinking about doing some spring cleaning(wink, wink), for the next meeting.

This will be meeting #16 for our chapter. I'm guessing a sawmill demo is in the works. I think I'll ride my bike to this meeting.

We can do that Bob, but unfortunately....there is no parking available for bikes. Strangely enough, you will have to bring your truck and trailer.

Hey Guys,
In the Exotic Blanks forum Ed and Dawn have issued an invitation to participate in the Beads of Courage program by making bowls with lids to give to the kids to keep their beads in when they get them. Details are in the forum and on the Beads of Courage website. Most of these go to kids that are fighting cancer. Could we discuss participating in this as a chapter? I think it's a great project that would give happiness and hope to a bunch of kids. Give it some thought and maybe we can discuss it at our next meeting. Maybe a "challenge" project for a meeting?

I'm not too good at making bowls but this sounds like a good cause. I see where Children's hospital in L R is doing this. Maybe this is the push I need. I really need to work on my finishing. Happy turning, Ted

Ted, I've never made a bowl in my life but I am going to give it a shot!

Was curious....do the bowls 'need' to be lidded? Or can a plan ole bowl be done?

I like turning 'green' timber and letting them become 'art'.....not very good at putting lids on them.

Should be some type of lidded vessel. Its for the kids to keep their beads in as they get treatments. They used to keep them in brown paper sacks but woodturners have started donating lidded bowls/treasure boxes as a better storage solution.

Heads up, I'm collecting another log/crotch piece for the 14th demo.....Butternut! And a small piece of Scyamore(although we might just split this one right down the middle and send it away as possible blanks for those 'lidded vessels'.

But the Butternut, it's a triple crotch with some wild coloring! Don't miss this next meeting! BTW, in case it isn't the best of weather? I'll set up a canopy and get some 'scraps' ready to burn....never know with Arkansas winters, it could be 10*F or 90*!!!!

I will try to be at your next meeting/demo. Since I am new to turning, need all the advice I can get. Turned about a dozen pens, I'm hooked now, so is bowl turning just as fun? That's my next venture.
Thanks,
Robert.

What could be more fun then to be standing in a foot of curlies?

Twenty days out everyone!

Was hoping to get a head-count of those that are coming?

Wanting to make sure I have enough 'grub' to serve up for everyone. Also would like some to bring a dessert, and it's probably a good idea for everyone to bring their own drinks(too many choices to provide them).

Looks like I can make this one. I'll bring banana pudding. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Also looking forward to meeting a few new faces. I'm wondering if someone might do a demo on a lid for a bowl, if it doesn't take up too much time. Got to get a little saw time. Scott, do some of us need to bring something besides just desserts? I can probably get Becky to whip up something if we need it. Sure wouldn't want it if I cooked it. Ted

I plan on coming to the meeting, first time for me, want to meet other wood turners, get advice and ideas. I need directions again and what time does it start. I will ask my wife to make some of her homemade brownies.

Oops, I guess I'm so use to everyone knowing where I hang my hat....I forgot to mention it.

Typically the meeting start around 10am....I get up early and there is always coffee going

Meeting address:(punch this stuff into a GPS please)

14 Matthews Lane
Cabot, Arkansas 72023

For those without GPS's...
>>> MapQuest <<<
(enter my address on first line and yours below - driving direction)

Screen snip....

By the way, I'm the four house on the right when you turn onto Matthews Lane.

We're up to seven(7)....I won't be able to eat this much pulled pork and the wife's' special baked beans by myself! And if you divide the Butternut chunk by 7, that would equal 200lbs each:eek: And then there is still the Scyamore and Persimmon and Eastern Red Cedar and ..........

OOOH Sycamore!

Don't get too excited Bob, it's only a simple log. About 8ft long and 10-11 inches round at the big end....

Was thinking about running the bandsaw mill right down through the pith, letting the chainsaw make a bunch of bowl blanks? The grain will be pretty clean, no crotch stuff. But it'll make for some easy turning!

The Butternut is probably going to be the "OOH-OOH stuff"!

Eight, maybe nine....cool.

Let's sweeten the pot a little!!!
There happens to be someone I know that found a few pieces of Flame Box Elder....and if the weather permits me getting it into the backyard, it may find it's way onto the mill. How many times do you find a IAP Chapter that is going to get a 14 diameter log that is 6-7 foot long....with some pretty nice red flame in it, that is willing to cut it and then give it away? Plus feed you?!?!

Guess what? You have to come to be able to get some.....

Well, maybe the snow and ice is gone for the year. My gravel road yesterday morning was a big snow drift. Now, with melting, the gravel is sinking into the mush. Oh well, spring isn't far off.
Anyway, hope next weekends meet is dry and cool to warm, no cold north wind blowing.
Hope my so called gravel road firms up. See ya'll Saturday.

FLAME BOX ELDER! SWEET! Do we have any turning demo planned?

I read a post by David last November requesting a sharpening demo, I thought I could do that if there is interest. I'm sure Scott's tools could use a touch up.

I have a couple Hunter carbide tools I could bring and let people try if interested. I have the #1 Osprey and the #5 Hunter. Hunter Tool Systems | The ease of use is similar to the easy wood tools but the Hunter tools are cutting tools vs. easy wood are scraping tools.

I'm moving back to Japan in September, so I'm selling a bunch of my equipment (mostly only selling flatwork machines.) So If you are in need of something you may want to stop my house on the way home (I'm in Cabot also.) I have a nice table saw, router table, 12inch disk sander, oscillating spindle sander, 1x30 belt sander, 18/36 drum sander and many other things.

Any other ways I can help Scott?

As of right now, there is a 10% rain possibility, but considering it's that far out(and most weather people can't tell you what it's doing outside if they are standing in it).... I was hoping to use a turning demo as a 'back-up' plan, but I can always use more sharpening.

I finished up my 'porch' by the shed, loaded the mill with a piece of mineral stained American Persimmon and re-positioned that Butternut for chainsaw milling...
The 8lb chunk of Boston Butt is waiting to become some pulled pork...

1x30 belt sander? You do knife sharpening too...got one that is in need of a 'regrind'?

I've never used it for metal, just getting into nooks and crannies on wood. I think it would work for metal if you put a ceramic belt on it.
