I get the weekly specials from William Woodwright and see they have the Diablo on sale this week. I created an order for a few of them and went through the shopping cart to see what postage would be. I was shocked to see the postage was like $34 Canadian dollars for 8 kits and a set of bushings.

First, is there a cheaper alternative for shipping they could use?

Second, is the Diablo available as a kit from a U.S. supplier?

Believe Steve is right. Appears to be a slightly modified Aero, same tube size 23/64. But probably same manufacturer as those at CSUSA. Freight cost of Diablo off sets the per kit coast from CSUSA IMO.

I believe you're right.

William Wood-Wright shows the bushings as 91A which is a numbering system similar to Berea's bushings. I looked through the Berea site and could not find 91A or something that looked like the Diablo.

I wish shipping from Canada was cheaper as I often see things offered by William Wood-Wright I would like to order but the shipping charges usually negate any savings.

I have ordered from WWW in the past and yes, the customs shipping is hard to swallow. WWW does have excellent customer service and gets shipments out the door quickly. I now order items from them that I can't find here in the states.
They do have some great mark downs on some of the weekly emails which help offset the shipping.

Just to clarify -- it is Wiliam WoodWrite, might make a difference if you were doing a search on Google.

Why not ask them directly? He is at the mercy of Canada Post, as Canadians are at the mercy of USPS. They have an 800 tel #, no charge calling. Bill Collier is the man that will answer the phone and will explain mailing costs to you.:biggrin:
 
I agree with Mack. Canadians often get shipping costs above $30 from US retailers. As far as service, Bill and Lillian are the best and they totally stand behind the products they sell!

Sorry Rick, You missed my point either intentionally or not intentionally. Any time I have a question regarding supplies, mailing or whatever, I'm inclined to ask that person directly rather than on an open forum. Just me, I guess!:smile:

If you look at their statement on left side of the Home page in the Help box, Shipping - INT-L you will see that they are using the best shipping option Canada Post offers. That has tracking, insurance, is the fastest shipping option, and signature followup. They could choose go with cheaper options that would cost a third as much but the order could take weeks, isn't tracked or insured.

I suspect they have had the hassles of orders taking too long to arrive to suit the client or of being "lost" and having to refund or replace the order too many times. Ask your US vendors how often that happens to them with in country orders. If if your order is sent by private couriers like FedEx or UPS the shipping would be even higher. :eek:

Your best option is to "big up" your order to spread the costs if you can't get them to ship at a cheaper option with you waving all damage/time/no delivery claims against them.

We live with the high cost of shipping as a matter of course with all things purchased cross border. I suppose if both our Customs wouldn't hold packages for up to 10 days before moving them along and there weren't people claiming they never got the goods things would be better for shoppers on both sides of the border.
 
There are cheaper methods to ship to the US via Canada post...but they take about a month to arrive, are untreaceable, and perhaps uninsured...and I don't know if a retailer would be willing to accept that risk.

While we Canadians are used to waiting for the post, I've read a lot of 'jeer' posts that talk about shipping times for suppliers on the US side of the border.

If you want it to ship slower, then it likely could save you a few bucks - but it will take forever to get there....shipping in Canada is all about tradeoffs - it's all about what you're willing to accept.

$34 is actually really good for shipping from Ontario to Texas.
Would you be getting dinged customs/duties/taxes for receiving the shipment?
 
For once I'm quite happy to be north of the border, penblanks is my main supplier. I agree with the poster above, it's been my experience with WWW that they respond very quickly to email, and take the time needed to answer questions with a phone call.
 
Pete and Andrew gave me the information I was looking for. It comes down to economics...can I order from WWW with sale prices and get the items cheaper than stateside, factoring in shipping and Paypal's currency conversion cost.

And there are products where WWW may be the single supplier, so I'll pay the costs if that is the situation.
 
I just bought 10 crush/grind pepper mill kits from Cam Lever designs, (Crush/Grind US) out of Erin, Ontario... the shipping was just $28 for the 10 pieces... even with the shipping, he has the best prices for the crush/grind peppermills kits... he is the US authorized agent for the manufacturer out of Denmark... same units CSUSA sells.... shipping was 4 days from ONT to Tennessee. I lost a sale earlier this week because U.S. postage out of Tennessee to Ontario for a set of wine glasses was over $45 US.

Just for fun I calculate for you your total cost and even if you paid 34$ for shipping, you saved 28$:
William Woodwrite special price
8 X 6.95 = 56$ + 34$ shipping = 90$ but paid in US dollars, your real cost was 77$

At CSUSA prices:
8 X 11$ = 88$ + shipping 10$ = 98.00 + Tx sales taxes 7.84$ it come down to 105.84

Jean Pierre, shipping into Texas from Utah, there wouldn't be any sales tax... so CSUSA cost is US$98 .. still a savings.
 
I had e-mailed them directly that same question. Here's his response:

I wanted some small items I couldn't seem to find in the US (hockey stick clips), so my solution was that I bought more than I wanted and I'll sell off the rest to recover some of the shipping.
